problem with onboard ati 4200 video

Scratching my head trying to figure this issue out. I gave my wife my AMD 555 BE setup and the motherboard is a gigabyte GA-MA785?-US2H board (going by memory, cant get to gigabyte's site here at work), that worked great for me. I was not using the onboard video though, I had an Nvidia graphics card. When I gave it to her, I retained the video card and turned on oboard video for her. I performed a clean Windows XP 32 bit install and installed the chipset drivers and the latest ATI drivers from their site for the integrated 4200 graphics chip. I set the video to UMA with 256 mb of memory in the bios and have also tried 512 mb of memory allocated to it. She right away started getting crashes, so I dropped back to the ATI 10.12 drivers, thinking it would solve her issues. No luck. I then dropped my 555 BE overclock back from 4 cores to the stock 2 cores @ stock speed. Same crashes. The blue screen shows the ATI2dvag, device driver stuck in an infinite loop error msg. Whats next? Is there something I'm missing here that I should be doing?

Well, you could do what I did, upgrade to Windows 7! I tried and tried with that onboard video. After much googling and digging I came to the conclusion that it just was not going to work with XP. I had been fine for close to a year but 1 day the blue screens started, maybe after a driver update, and they wouldn't go away. A temporary fix is to turn down hardware acceleration a bit using the slider but that was just not gonna work for me. So I went with the 3 license pack of Win7 Home Premium and haven't looked back. If you figure this out..you might be the first in the whole wide world.... Good Luck

You run windows update yet and installed the version of Video drivers they have?

I have a 4200 system for my HTPC but am on Win7 64bit.

Yep Win7 64bit and I haven't had much luck with Windows updating my hardware drivers. If I see them in the list of updates, I'll just get them from guru3d and do my own uninstall, clean and install. That's if I'm gonna update them in the first place. Half the time the fixes are trivial or unrelated to my use.

The overclock is/was 100 stable in linpack overnight, so I'm fairly confident thats not it. I've found a couple other tidbits of info online, where some people think it might be the .net update that needs to occur or possibly a pci bridge that needs adjusted. I'll try a few things tonight. I think i have an X1300 pci express card I can throw in as well if necessary.

This is purely for 2d, no 3d at all.

I think i have the same board as you. I had some flake problems during boot up under 10.8(strange distortion, and some pixelizing) , but have been stable under 10.9. Might give some older drivers a try.

Also have you tried just running with the sideport memory?

yes I gave my mom this same board running an x2, she's using win 7 home edition w/ on board graphics, works perfectly. Also I tried Ubuntu, no problem either, don't know about xp. If your wife isn't using much beyond browsing web or watching movies, I think ubuntu is an excellent option, modern interface, picked up the onboard just fine.

I've rolled back to 10.11 and will see if it bluescreens. I tried a couple other things, with the .net version and it didn't fix anything. She only uses the machine to browse the web, read mail, etc, but also does our book keeping on it with Quicken so she needs a windows machine. I'm not going to go out and buy Windows 7 for her because it should work fine in XP.

Just for my own curiosity, do you recall what multiplier/frequency combination allowed you to break 4 GHz with all 4 cores unlocked? Did you find one particular multiplier was more successful than others, or did you simply find the highest frequency that was stable, and the picked the highest multiplier at that stable frequency?

Its in my signature. I just pushed it until it wasn't stable at a reasonable voltage and left it at that.

XP is pretty old there guy, might want to save yourself the hassle and go with a drop in card rather than troubleshoot an OS that's quickly loosing driver support.

Does she need the Overclock? I'd set the speed to Stock and see if the crashes continue. I suspect they may not.

Performed a fresh install of Windows 7 and have had no crashes in a week. I think the XP 32 drivers were just not tested well.

Same problem, motherboard Biostar TA 785G3 HD with integrated ATI 4200...
ATI seems to think that nobody will use integrated graphics card
Problem exists in xp and win7 with any version of driver, tested
The only solution is to don't install video driver at all, what I did, or buy a real graphic card.

Might be worth checking the igp's clock settings, my board with an extra 128MB of sideport memory has issues with that memory running at full speed. Adjusting down clocks would also help if the problems are due to chipset temperature, on the budget boards the heatsinks tend towards the bare minimum.

It coud be.. but I don't think so. Could on chipset only igp be bad.. hm. Board work fine without graphic driver (in windows) and in ubuntu with installed ATI driver.
I tried igp without sideport, only UMA.. and nothing better.. but I will try to decrease sideport memory clock sometime, when I had the courage to install the driver again

I have 2 XP setups doing the same thing, about once or twice a week. One is a 760 chipset, the other is a 785. I uninstalled the latest drivers and got the ones from Windows update, but the crashes still occur. These are office computers that have to run XP, so changing the OS isn't a solution.

Have you updated to the newwest BIOS yet?

Yes, they both have the latest BIOS, and I originally installed the newest drivers. I used the ATI uninstall utility to remove remove all the ATI software that was listed, and then rebooted and went to Windows Update to get that driver. They don't run anything graphic intensive, just office software and web browsing.

Should I try older drivers? My computer has the onboard 4200, running driver version 8.780.0.0 and it's never crashed.

See if there is a aftermarket driver/software remover for ATI.

I knwo I had issues with nvidia leaving junk on my system until I found a program to remove all.

Search for a ATI driver cleaner like this

and try that. That was the first one I found in a google search so may not be good or could be great?

Try JUST the video driver after the cleaning to see if its the drive and not one of the other peices causing issues.

I found what seems to be a permanent fix, but I'm not sure it would work out well for gamers. I installed the video drivers from 9/10/2010, version 8.780.0.0 on six different computers and they're all doing fine. It was a mixed bunch of boards, all with 760 or 780 chipsets. If anyone needs the install package email me and I'll send you a link.
