Problem with Sapphire HD 4670 1GB?

I have a new box with the following.

CPU: AMD Athlon X2 7850
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA770-UD3
RAM: 4 GB DDR2 Kingston
Graphics: Sapphire HD 4670 1GB DDR3
O/S: Windows 7

Everything seemed to be fine for the first week or so. However yesterday I installed Company of Heroes and on playing it only for a few minutes the PC shutdown itself. On restarting it again shutdown midway through windows 7 startup.

I checked in the BIOS and saw the CPU and system temps. The were 46C and 38C respectively. No problems there. I waited for a while and started again. This time i had a successful startup. I monitored the GPU temperature and it was around 60C with fan speed 40%.

I fired up COH and after playing for 5 minutes paused and looked at GPU temperature -- it was 104C with fan speed 100%. It got down to 94C in 10 seconds. I switched to the game again and the system shoutdown in 15-20 seconds.

What's going on?

I had a three year old IDE DVD writer which i put to use in this. Could it be that the IDE ribbon cable is obstructing airflow?

This is a much larger problem than cable obstruction. Before it shut down, did you see any graphical errors (artifacts)?

Nothing abnormal visually before shutdown. It is just just sudden.

This doesn't explain your particular issue, but I should point out that Catalyst 9.6 has issues with Company of Heroes (consistently crashing to desktop after half an hour) in Vista and W7. There are a few threads about it in the ATI forums. In my case, I had to roll back to Cat 9.5, otherwise every match resulted in a CTD after a while. Other than that, I haven't had an issues playing CoH in Windows 7 RC...

In OP's case, it does sound like overheating / poor heatsink contact.

What power supply do you have?

The temp is 53-55C when idle.

I have a gigabyte case with built in 450W power supply.

12V rail is reading 11.98V

how many case fans do you have and where?

sounds like a bum gpu, you could try reseating the heatsink but some manufacturers will void your warranty for removing it.

The store I bought it from says that they will do an immediate replacement of the card if it is faulty.

Glad to hear that worked out. its 90% the GPU having an improperly seated heatsink.

Just curious, what store was it?
