problem with sony cd-rw

hi

i think my cd-rw just died on me. from the beginning, it had been humming and for the past few months, it had been roaring and today, it stopped reading my mp3 and mpeg files but i can still play audio CDs on it but then, the CD runs forever....as it stops responding to the "stop" button on the winamp or media player. the only way to stop is to shut down the system!

the warranty has lapsed long before this happened and now, i am like a jedi haunted by the "force."

i been wanting to get another one but budget is real tight these days for me and so,.....no go...

i would really appreciate any kind of advice on this.

have you tried calling sony to see if they will replace it?

If it's a mechanical failure there isn't a whole lot you can do besides send it in for repair or replace it with a new one... espcially if the warranty has expired.

Although, it is possible that you have some really crappy CD-Rs that aren't balanced properly (did you, by any chance, buy some "no name" CD-Rs?), which will give you that loud roaring type sound. It's also very hard, if not impossible, for your CD drive to read the files off your CDs under those extreme vibration conditions. Might explain why you can still read regular audio CDs.

Since it is out of warranty, open the drive and blow out the dirt
that probably has accumulated on the inside to see if that helps.

Be very careful when cleaning it. Best to use compressed air, with short light bursts.
Do not blow the dirt out with you mouth. Saliva does not work well with laser lenses.
