Problem with Win2K MBR

I had win2k installed and then I made another partition on the same drive and installed 98se. 98 wrote itself to the mbr overtop of win2k so that 98 started automatically. i used the recovery console for 2k and tried the fixboot and fixmbr commands but neither of them have succeeded in putting 2k back into the mbr. What am i doing wrong here?

Try removing win98. Then fixmbr. I think your supposed to have win98 installed first, maybe it the other way arround though, good luck.

i already have removed 98. using the recovery console i did the fixmbr command. it said that my mbr is corrupt so i told it to fix it and it said that it did. but then if i run the command again, it says the mbr is corrupt again. i have also tried starting dos and using fdisk /mbr but that didn't work either

ok, nevermind that. i just read that that is an error with the fixmbr command and microsoft has confirmed it. but anyway, my damn computer still doesn't work. any other suggestions?

you mean you have run the R option when booting from the win2k cd to fix a previous installation?....if not try that....set your bios boot sequence to be floppy then cdrom then hdo...boot from the win2k cd and follow the options path for repairing a previous installation

not sure....is there alot of stuff you dont have backed up on it....if not try installing again over top of itself..and if it asks if you wnat to save the old folder choose yes

Go back to W2k setup and have it repair automatically instead of using the recovery console...I did it that way and it worked like a charm.

I would have expected the fdisk /mbr to work. Does anyone know if successive uses of fdisk /mbr will step a system back through all the previous MBRs? Or is there only the immediate precursor MBR stored?

well i just used it to get rid of the XP option ...i was triple booting winMe winXP and RH linux....lilo was the boot loader but if i wanted to boot windows it would give it over to the win2k loader then i would select between the to win versions....well i deleted XP off my array then ran fdisk/mbr from an me startup floppy and then reconfigured lilo after booting from a RH startup diskette

but i have never tried to get a win2k or XP bootloader back...lol...usually i am trying to get rid of it
