Problem with wireless setup....pls help

hi, i have a big problem...I can connect with my laptop but not with my tower with a cable. I recently upgraded to a shuttle a37n motherboard with amdxp2000. i had previously used a pcchips mobo with integraded lan as well.

what could i have messed up. i know the shuttles lan works because if i hook up dsl modem directly it works fine but when trying to go thru dlink 614+ router i get nothing...i cant even get into the web site setup..iam using xp professional... any ideas i tried the dlink tech support and they were no help...thanks in advance...

Hi Mikie.

1.
I'd suggest trying to ping the router with your desktop machine.
Open a command window and type:
PING 192.168.2.1 [enter]
Change 192.168.2.1 to your router's ip.
If you can't ping your router, check your network settings. Make sure they are set to DHCP.

2. Is the cable good? / Are the plugs in correctly? Can you access the router with your laptop using the wired lan ports?

3. can you access the config utility with your laptop over wireless?

ya, see if you can ping the router at all. Maybe your cable is loose/bad? Try jiggling it, sometimes they fit good in one systems, and not in another.

Try to ping the tower from the laptop.

run ipconfig from the command line on the tower and see if it even got an IP from the router, try to release/renew and see what happens.

Some routers via the web interface let you see which client machines currently are connected and have IP's. If you can access this from the laptop, check to see if the desktop is listed there at all.

thanks for the help so far guys/gals..never sure... i tried this morning to use my laptop and connect but still nothing...ill try a new cable tonight and then if not get an rma number...its weird how i can get the wireless to work and not the wired....i know

Same thing happened to me: I believe I did an upgrade to Win 2K and Internet Explorer 6.0. Seems that Microsoft set my Secuirty Settings on the Dersktop NIC to Custom. I had to go back in and change all settings to Medium. It worked. Before doing this I could receive but not send anything on the Internet. Guess hwat? Even when I had my settings automatically set to Custom, I could send and receive e-mail from my ISP. Go figure. By the way, I turned off the PC, router and cable modem and turned them on in the reverse direction.
