I have Windows 7 RC installed and using this DVD burner
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827151178

EVERY single movie I burn skips and stutters during playback, usually at the end of the disc. Ive tried burning original discs. I tried using dvd decrypter to make an ISO file on hard disk then burning. I tried both Nero and Windows 7's Disc Image Burner (right clicking on the ISO and burning). Same results. I probably already know the answer but just want to make sure you guys dont have problems with Nero under Windows 7. Im guessing it might be a defective drive, bought only two months ago.

First of all, Nero does not have Win 7 compatible vers ready yet - they are waiting for RTM
This not to say it doesnt work, it may, or it may not depending on what you are doing
"the latest version of nero is 9.4.13.2
this does NOT work with build 7227 of windows 7
nero confirms this and say they'll be issuing a working version when microsoft finalizes win7.
Nero has not yet confimed to me that they'll be updating my version without cost...."

However, you did try Win 7 burn, so that means you have some other prob

Now you have a new O/S and you hook up an old 8X USB DVD burner to it???
I really dont understand this thinking.
I always try to set up my builds to AVOID trouble - not tempt it.

As far as skipping at end of movie burn - the newer burn sw have settings to burn less than full theoretical disc, since the outer edges of dye are where all the imperfections are, This option will set compression to squeeze full video at say 4.3GB

While Pioneer has allegedly quit making DVD burners, you can still find 216 and 218 SATA drives around

Even the very old units are great.
I have 108 112 and 115 drives that have never made a bad burn.
And if you want to go whole hog, the $200 Pioneer BluRay is superb

Next, people in the know who do a lot of varied burning use DVDFab - tons of settings
Current is 6022
Once I found DVD Fab, I lost all interest in Nero

And for ISO's its UltraIso FTW
But once again, Win 7 and DVDFab?- too early yet.

Finally, You should use Verbatim 16X +R MIT (Manuf in Taiwan)
Not MIC MII MIP (China India Phillipines)
This means you will have to buy local and go to store with your little magnifying glass to see where it was made in tiny print on the label.

The external burner was actually bought for an old XP laptop, I just recently built a new PC. I got so fed up last night burning coasters I reinstalled XP. The discs I burned still skips so its definitely a defective drive and not a problem with Windows 7. FWIW I was using TDK and RiDATA, both made in Taiwan. But thanks for your suggestions Bozo, I will give the Pioneer DVD and UltraIso a go.

It sounds like the drive and media combination that you are using. Consider updating the firmware on your drive if you can, or try a different brand of media, or simply just burn slower. Burning at maximum drive speed is rarely a good decision.
