Problems copying files to usb 2.0 cruzer mini

Hello Everybody,

I'm having a serious problem copying files from my computer to my usb 2.0 Cruzer Mini 256mb drive. Everytime I try to copy this zip file that is about 5mb from my desktop to the Cruzer Mini, it starts copying it, but then about half way through or so, a windows error message comes up saying:

"Cannot copy filename: The device is not ready."

Then when I hit the "ok" button on the error message and go and try to open up the Cruzer Mini drive to view its contents, a message will come up saying:

"Please insert a disk into drive E:."

And I'll have to unplug and replug the usb drive back in. Then when I open up the Cruzer Mini usb drive folder after I have restarted it, and click on the file that I just tried to copy over (that is now partially on the mini drive), the Cruzer Mini folder contents browser closes up really quick for some reason, and once again if I try to open it up the mini drive folder again it says "please insert a disk into drive E:"

The only way for me to go and delete the file now is to access it through the dos command prompts. I also tried copying the zip file over through the dos command prompt but would still get the same problems.

I have Windows XP Pro as my operating system. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? If so I appreciate any of your input. I can't seem to figure out what the problem is and really need to copy some big files over from one computer to another.

Have you tried reformatting the drive first?
Could be you have a file system error on the drive and a formatting of the drive would fix that.

The only other thing i can think of is either a virus or some type of adware or other type of malware that could possibly cause this. YOu can download and run adaware but make sure you get it up to date first, or run hijack this, which you can google to get, its also free and runs wherever you put it, no install needed.

But update antivirus and run that first of all, after you reformat, as i think you may very well solve the drive prog with a reformat. Failing that, then run antivirus, then adaware or hijack this.

thanks nork for the reply on the problem i have with the mini cruzer. I was about to format the drive, but then I wasn't sure which file system I should select. It gives me two choices:

FAT
FAT32

It doesn't give me NTFS.

Please let me know which you think is best.

I would go with FAT 32

If you dont have current drivers that could cause the problem.

The sandisk site says that the drivers are not needed for windows xp OS. I downloaded it anyway, just now but it didn't seem to fix the problem. We're thinking that there may be a physical problem with the cruzer mini. I tried formatting it and it could not format completely.

between what you have posted and our pms i would say your drive is faulty, which would be the first i ever heard of, but prolly not that uncommon, they are still fairly new, these usb thumbdrives, only a few yrs old.
