Just built this system based on the Asus P5KC, the E4500 and Corsair XMS 4-4-4-12 memory. After XP was installed, I went on to install the drivers. Asus provide this InstALL CD, which should take care of it all. But the strange thing is that the Realtek HD audio is left uninstalled. When I choose to install manually, it just says it could not find its drivers, even though I point it to the win32/XP folder on the CD. Also tried downloading from Asus site - same thing. Do you think I got a faulty motherboard? I've built quite some computers in the past, and never experienced this before...

Also, my E4500 must be a "dud", since it requires 1.4v to run stable at 3Ghz with a Thermaltake XP120 heatsink.

Please help!!

If the device manager isn't telling you where the conflict is, I would remove any other pci devices and uninstall any wireless connections and try again. You're on the right track. I usually have similar problems with the usb device driver on many boards until I install a service pack then the usb driver at just the right moment. Uninstall all the sound devices one by one and start over after disconnecting other cards and devices.

The only card in my system is the HD3870, so there is nothing to remove...

Also, there is no "conflict" as far as I can see. I have the normal yellow "?" on the device, but when I try to install the drivers, pointing it to the location of the drivers it says it could not be installed because there were no suitable drivers found in that location...

i'm assuming this is the now infamous microsoft hd bus driver issue as you say it's realtek related. here's what to do if so:

I've been following this thread. I had a heck of a time getting the Realtek HD Audio on my motherboard working. I have a Gigabyte GA-G33M-S2H motherboard. I built a new system and installed my old hard drive. I've had so many difficulties, but now everything works just fine. The last problem was with the audio not working. Here's how I got it to work:

First I followed the directions from the Gigabyte website:

Quote:
1. Please make sure your Windows XP have included service pack 1 or service pack 2. Please right-click the ?My computer? icon on desktop. Select ?Properties\ General. (Please refer to picture 1 as below) If your system does not include service pack, please update from Microsoft official website. Please connect to internet and launch the ?Internet Explorer?, click the ?Tools? on the tool bar and select the ?Windows Update?.

2. Please make sure if the ?Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio? exist in ?Device manager\ System devices?. Please right-click the ?My computer? icon on desktop. Select ?Properties\ Hardware\ Device Manager. (Please refer to picture 2 as below). If the ?UAA Bus Driver? does not exist, please install it from driver CD/ DVD. Please launch ?My Computer?, open CD/ DVD drive\ Audio\ MSHDQFE\ Win2K_XP\ US?, to execute kb888111xpsp1.exe (for SP1 system) or kb888111xpsp2.exe (for SP2 system).

3. If the ?Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio? is work properly, there may be an ?Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus? behind ?Sound, video and game controllers? or an ?Unknown device? behind ?Other devices?. Please disable this device. (Please refer to picture 3 as below). You can skip this step if device mentioned earlier does not exist in ?Device Manager?.

4. Please disable the ?Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio? as well. (Please refer to picture 4 as below)

5. After that, please uninstall the ?Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio?. (Please refer to picture 5 as below)

6. When finish the above steps, please click the ?Scan for hardware changes? button. (Please refer to picture 6 as below) When the ?Found new hardware wizard? display, please do not click the ?Next? button. Please click the ?Cancel? button at this point.

7. You can now install the audio driver from driver CD/ DVD or from the driver file that you have downloaded from Gigabyte website. (Please refer to picture 7 as below; the path in driver CD is \Audio \Realtek \Setup.exe)

Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus

I just re-installed XP and the same thing happens all over again. I will try to follow your description, tenax, but I just cant understand why only a few is affected by this "bug"? Is it because I run a swedish XP?

yeah, that would look correct..that has to be installed, then disabled etc as per instructions or the realtek driver won't work. many are affected by this so you know..it's just that some motherboard manuals aren't clear or the description of what to do is not on the cd (i.e. on the gigabyte website when you download the newer drivers, it's all there) or a mobo manufacturer has simply neglected to provide the issue. i suspect it doesn't appear as widespread a problem as it could because of people searching the manufacturer's websites and finding the info. i know both gigabyte and abit do have this info on their websites..if you can find it

I tried the described steps, but it did not work...

So I continued to google and found this thread, which had the sollution!:
http://forum.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?t=127492

Unbeliavable, the device which could not be installed was actually a device with the ATI HD3870! (Some audio bus for the HDMI connetor). And the next strange thing is that this driver does NOT come with the driverpackage downloaded from ATIs homepage. You HAVE to use the supplied CD which comes with the card!

So now the problem is solved =)

Sorry, I have edited the link above. My situation and actions were pretty much identical to the guy in that post.
