Problems installing XP Pro Upgrade to Win 2000

Have been having problems with trying to upgrade from Win 2000 to XP Pro. During the copying installation files step I get a message that the xyx.sys file can't be copied. Multiple attempts always fail. This leads to the installation failing after reboot and the RAID drivers have been installed.

Have retried the install several times and each time the name of the .SYS file is different. Have tried the following;

1. Cleaning the disk
2. Slowing down the drive speed.
3. Read elsewhere could be a memory problem, 9 consecutive passes on memtest 86 without a failure.

Any ideas or is my XP Pro disk junk?

Backup your data and just do a clean install.

Have you tried a different dvd/cdrom drive?

could be a flaky power supply

Tried a different CD drive and got the same result. My power supply is a relatively new (within 6 months) Corsair HX520 and there are no other symptoms like BSOD and spontaneous reboots etc. so I doubt it is that.

Any other ideas?

Copy the CD files to the hard drive and run setup.exe from there?

Last night I pulled together a frankenbox from parts lying around and tested it on that. There was no problem with the disk so I will have to start a process of elimination with my main PC. Will probably start with the IDE cable for the DVD Drive.

From my experience when that happens and it's is not the CD or drive itself, I have found memory to be the issue. If you have 2 sticks, try taking one out and running setup. If that one fails, then try the other one. You would be surprised. I found this out from when I was beta testing for XP.

I read you ran memtest86 - but it is not infallible. Most recently I had this happen on a DELL laptop. The XP Pro reinstall was driving me nuts. Memory passed all tests - when I took one stick out it worked. As soon as I put that one back in the thing errored out and blue screened.

The tears and frustration continue...

Swapped the memory sticks out 1 at a time....still fails

Tried a third memory stick DDR333 vs. DDR 400...refused to boot

Replaced the IDE cable for the DVD drive...still fails

Guess I am left with, Motherboard, CPU, PSU, 1 of 4 drives, 1 of 2 raid chips or software. Will try with one at a time some of my system tray programs uninstalled rather just deactivated.

Other than that it's time to save up for a IP35 PRO as I am a little suspicious of the Asrock as it refuses to overclock 1 MHz and pass Orthos. Any other ideas out there?

I know I wrote off VirtualLarry's suggestion of the power supply but that is not something I can really test at at the current time anyway.

Ended up doing a new install that worked OK, with save settings wizard all was happy, happy.
