Problems updating devices via USB

This problem started with my Tomtom gpss doing firmware updates. The devices are connected via USB. Everything downloads ok the update started and about 10 - 20% into it, the devices disconnected and I was left with dead units. I tried turning off antivirus and firewall, no difference. I think I changed the power settings never to sleep, no difference. I finally got the updates done by booting into safe mode.

I thought this was a Tomtom only problem as I have never had this problem updating other devices and gpss, even older Tomtom models.

Last night while updating the firmware on my Iphone 4, the same thing seemed to happen. Luckily this time I was finally able to get my system and Itunes to recognize the dead Iphone and it did a restore and all was well.

This leads me to believe there is something going on that disconnects or interupts the USB ports for a long enough period that the updates fail. I am running Windows 7 64bit, 8gb ram and plently of hard drive space. Is there anything you can think of that would cause these types of problems and/or any settings to prevent the USB problems and give them priority or prevent them from sleeping, etc.?

Yes it seems to. At least I was finally able to update the dead Tomtom gpss in safe mode. The Iphone finally updated when I force rebooted the Iphone. The computer finally recognized it and Itunes recognized it in Recovery mode and all went well after that.

But, I assume the initial Iphone problem had to do with the USB port. Just as an FYI, I have tried all of the USB ports including the ones in the back of the box, on top of the box, etc. when fussing with the gpss with no difference.

It may be a simple case of the ports not being able to supply enough current to the device. Try doing it using a powered USB hub and see if it works that way.

Consider using a powered hub. Many on board USB devices can "drop" due to unsufficient power.

I have my wife's phone to upgrade tonight. I will try it with a powered hub and see what happens!
