Problems w/networking with crossover cable!!!

As soon as i got home i started trying to set up my 2 computers with a crossover cable. After following many many tutorials on the net and getting people to try and help, i only found one solution, Anandtech i hope u guys can help!

When i first plugged it in, both computers were recognized in the networking thing, but i could not access them, it gave me an error. Now after playing with IP settings and all that, i could not see any computers, only the entire network thing(which i could not access). Some times my computer name(Wardemon) would pop up in the networking thing, but i only saw the other pc(Enduser) once, the first time. Both systems run Win 98 se. I tried all the trouble shooting wizards on the net that i could find, still nothing. I cannot even ping the other computer.

I was wondering is there is a way to test out my crossover cable, it is the first time i try and use this cable, my friend made it for me yesterday.

You can try this to make sure your cable is working.

Go into your Networking settings - Click on TCP/IP,go to properties.
Under IP Address click on specify -


(PC 1)
IP Address - 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
leave everything else default
Hit Ok

(PC 2)
IP Address - 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
leave everything else default
Hit Ok

Go into Identification - Make sure Workgroup is the same name for both your PC's - and computer names are different from one another.


Then hit Ok on the main networking screen and it will prompt for reboot.
after booting back up,give it a few seconds then go into MsDos and try to ping one another to see what happens.

If you can ping one another,the cable should be fine.
then just install File and Printer sharing and you will be able to share files back and fourth.
just be sure to set a Drive up for sharing on each computer.
(Right click C:/D: and click sharing)

What Barny suggested is correct.. You might also want to enable File sharing. Also make sure that the C drives are shared with the other compute. If not you will not be able to see any folder.. Or you can limit the user on computer 2 only t see a specific folder on Computer 1 I.E. only making that folder a shared file(drive).

To do this is easy. My Computer -> select C: Drive ->Properties ->Share. You might need to set up who can share.. Usually you give the other computer name sharing rights.

I am not a Network guy but have experienced the setup of a Small Lan.

This worked for me.. It should for you.

Pinging is the defining connectivity tool with IP, but one successful ping does not ensure that a homemade cable is good. At least not reliable. Do what is suggested and assign IP's and ping the remote IP with the t switch. Something like this at the prompt

C:\ping 192.168.0.1 -t

That will be a continuous ping. Look echos should be fairly consistent. If they are not or you get a timeout occasionally you could very well have a bad cable. You could buy a cheap cable tester at Radio shack or Home depot if you want to be sure the crossover is good. Oh hit Ctrl and C at the same time to stop the ping and get back to a prompt.

Well ive tried specifying the ip's, i still cant ping at all, but if i put the 2 ips the same, i get a confilct, this means the cable is working right? File sharing is enabled on both computers. I have never been able to ping the other computer since i got it. But i can ping localhost.

Please give me some more ideas, if not i will try and get another cable.

Well it means it can pass packets, not necessarily that it is good though it is curious you cant ping at all. What IP addresses and mask did you give exactly and do you have any firewalls installed on either machine?

The first computers IP is 192.168.0.1 and the second computer is 192.168.0.2. The subnet mask for both is 255.255.255.0 i dont have DNS or wins or gateway enabled.

How curious. If all the cabling is good then those should have no trouble at least pinging. When you set your IP address, are you sure that you set it for TCP/IP bound to the adapter you are using? Do you possibly have multiple network adapters in either of the computers? Maybe a list of the adapters/protocols you have set up in your network settings would help someone figure out your problem.

Are you sure that the cable you are using is a crossover?
Are you sure the network cards are installed properly (i.e. Windows says "This device is working properly.", although that doesn't really mean it is)?

Thats about all I can think of to check for.

I only have one NIC in each computer. The crossover cable is homemade, it was never tested before. Maybe its just the cable after all, i will try and check on the internet if it is made properly.

Edit: it reads the network cards properly in windows. I checked the crossover cable, it seems to be made right. I dont know what else could be the problem! i tried pinging the other pc again, still nothing, i cannot ping my computer from the other "enduser" eiter. But when i put the computers the same IP i get a conflict message on my computer. On both computers i can see the local user, but thats it, not the other user.

I hope someone can help me with this, its getting to be a real pain!

What networking protocals do you have installed? Make sure you have Netbios,TCPIP, or IPX/SPX installed. you can always uninstall and reinstall them. I know win98 has had problems with networking before. If you are using the IPX/SPX make sure you set it 802.3 .

I currently have TCP IP installed. I never tried IPX/SPX, ill give it a try.

Edit: I tried IPX/SPX, that doesnt work, i also tried netbeui, that doesnt work either! Its been 2 full days ive been trying to get this going! :frown:


Anyone have another idea that might help me? I will try anything!!!!!!

You say that you 'checked the crossover cable, it seems to be made right'. Just because you have the wires lined up correctly in the plug doesn't mean that it was crimped properly. How did you test the cable and connectors? Just go to Best Buy and pickup a crossover cable and try it out.
