Problems w/ SP2

I was experiencing problems recently with saving files to HD and getting
a "Delayed write failure" message.
This began not long after SP2 installation.

I emailed Microsoft about it and they told me to remove it!

Stated that it may be having hardware and software compatibility issues.

Anyone here having problems? If so, I've got that email saved with the
steps for removing SP2

Is the problem occuring when writing to a specific disk (i.e. a second/external hard drive, flash media or floppies)? Whichever the case may be I'd start by looking into controller driver updates.

SP2 does have compatability "issues" with some software/device drivers; but these "issues" are generally by design (MS plugging a bug or voulnerability in their software and in the process breaking 3rd party apps/drivers that make use of it). I'm surprised that PSS would just give you a blanket response to simply remove it.

It occurs when writing to my secondary HDD.

I found the culprit to be Go Back
removed that and SP2

What gets me is Microsoft told me to remove SP2...
I figured they would advise against that.

why are you using go back? doesnt system restore do esentially the same thing?

It's been some time since I've looked into it but I was actually under the impression that system restore in windows XP was built-on leased code from go back so I'm surprised there are issues between the 2 (assuming you arent running both at the same time).

<- searching the web now for pages that document issues with goback and SP2; not having much luck.

thanks for checking on that...

Well...MS also advised me to remove Go Back as well. I was just running Go Back
but now I'll just use the system restore if I need to.

Now that I did, the error doesn't occur anymore.

Just wondering if anyone else was having these issues

From Microsoft:

I fully understand the inconvenience of this issue. This issue can be caused by the following factors:

1. Windows looses the connection to the drive that contains the file that is being saved.

2. The GoBack utility in Norton System Works is installed.

3. There is a hardware conflict.

4. A cable and hard disk are not compatible.

5. There is corrupted data file in the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service.

6. Incompatible hardware (including drivers)

Please understand that since SP2 has made critical changes to the system some software applications and hardware devices have compatibility issues with SP2. Since this may be a critical error, to ensure that the computer can work properly and your data are safe, I recommend that we use the following steps to remove SP2:

Apparently goback does more than system restore (backing up additional items):

I wonder if your problem was that both of them were running; I'm curious, did you disable system restore before you install/while you were running goback?

If goback is gone than I would install SP2.

I wouldnt be surprised if there are updates for goback in the near future that will let it work under SP2 and than you could have both

Hmm, actually I'm not in OR anymore; just moved outside of Vancouver, WA (right across the river from Portland, OR). Sounds like it is time to update my profile...

Hawaii, eh? Never been there but heard it is a nice place.

you should visit Hawaii...at least once in your life.
Time to get away from that cold weather

Yeah, especially considering that, every time I send an error report to Microsoft, the browser window that opens up basically says "Install Service Pack 2, and your PC won't crash like this again!"

MS looked at using GoBack, but then developed their own code instead. It's not a licensed version, AFAIK.

Edit: It's just a bad idea in general, to ever upgrade your OS (sevice pack, etc), with any Roxio or Symantec products installed. I recommend fully un-installing them first (and then run the manual cleaning procedures listed on their respective web sites, because their automated un-installers don't work properly).

GoBack and system restore are completely different technologies.

I wouldn't be surprised if GoBack uses Microsoft's VSS service which has had several changes in SP2. Goback also does some nasty changes to your hard drive's MBR or bootsector (can't remember which - been a while since I had some cases resulting from it).

Microsoft may advise you to remove SP2 as part of troubleshooting but they should then provide you with any necessary support to get it back on again and working. If your case with them is already closed just give your support engineer a call and have him/her reopen the incident.

They will NOT provide "Remove SP2" as the final solution. If you feel they have, you should provide feedback to your support engineer's manager. He should have provided you the contact information already.

Microsoft will tell you to uninstall sp2 , to restore system functionality.
In the case of installing sp2 with go Back installed , i don't believe it would ever be stable due to the
low level filter drivers in GoBack Fudging the update.
Consider yourself lucky that your error was not a fatal one.

That's no sh1t. SP2 will NOT cause a delayed write failure. That's some funky 3rd party drivers going on there. Delayed write failures will inevitably lead to a corrupt filesystem if you let it go on for very long.
