problems with 2000 adv server

okay, so i get the server configured, and working, but i can't get it to allow anyone to logon because it says that the network cable is unplugged anytime i try to enable the network connection. when i plug the machine into the hub, the connected light won't show up, but when i plug in another machine, it works great. i'm actually on a different machine using the same hub right now. any help would be greatly appreciated ~ thanks in advance

Maybe it's your NIC? Try completely uninstalling it, and then re-install it with latest drivers.

So you are saying that if you connect one machine to the same port on the hub using the same cable it works, while another doesn't? That's definitely a hardware problem with the network card, sine the light should go on as soon as you turn the power switch on, way before the drivers are loaded.

same port, same cable, same hub. the card worked a week ago, though, but i haven't had a chance to play with my since, so i didn't see the problem. i'm glad it's only me on the network. i'm reinstalling the drivers now, so we'll see

get a straight patch cable

sounds like you are using a crossover

nope, straight patch cable and it still won't work. does the server have to be plugged into the uplink or can it just be plugged into any of the ports?(plugged into uplink now)

any port. Uplink is if you are coming off of another hub. In that case there should be a midi button that switches you from a uplink port to a normal. If you do not have that button then that port is dedicated for uplink. Try another port.

You should be using a straight-through patch cable to connect your Server's NIC to a regular port (not uplink) on the hub. If you absolutely MUST connect to the uplink port for some reason, then you can use a crossover cable. Check the wires on your cable to see if pairs 1,2 and 3,6 are crossed.

I really don't mean any disrespect by this, but it sounds like you are using a cross-over cable if plugging one PC into another PC gives you link. Look at the ends of the cables and note what color the wires are. They should be in the same order on each end.

Edit-If they aren't you're probably using a cross over cable or one that wasn't crimped properly.

nope, it's a patch cable. i'm sure of it. i think one of the main reasomns it's not working is that when i installed the server, i didn't have an IP or any of the network info for it, so i'm in the middle of reinstalling and i'll just set it up as a local and worry about the web later. it's just a real pain in the butt. but i guess i have one more question. being that i've never setup a server on my own before and just administered ones that are already working, how would i go about setting the server up share the internet connection? can i just right click on the connection and hit share and config it like that? or is there another program to use or what? thanks for your help

well, it's been a while since I've done this, but go into configure your server click networking and click routing. Then just go through the wizard and it should configure it for you. One thing I did have problems with is a known good 3com ISA network card. I absolutely couldn't get it to route with that card. I ended up deinstalling 4 times before I tried a different NIC.

Does your hub have a crossover switch? If so press that button and see if it lights up. Also to check for a cross over cable see if you have 4 wires in the RJ-45 connector. If you have 8 wires hold both ends of the cable up side by side and see if the cable order matches. If you have 4 strands or if the 8 wire strands don't match you have a crossover cable. Also take the cable out of the machine that is working and plug that cable into the server.

If after all of this you still don't see a light it's your nic card and/or driver. Double check your driver and reinstall if needed.

You can have 4 strands in a patch cable and not have it be a crossover cable.

You just need to check if wires 1,2,3,6 have the same ordering on both ends of the patch cable. If on one end the 1,2 and 3,6 wires were swapped, then you have a crossover cable.

i'm 100% positive that it is not a crossover. it's a straight patch cable. it's the setup on the server that's screwing me up. i've put the cable into 3 different hubs, used like 10 different cables, and i formatted the hard drive and i'm in the process of setting it up all over again. maybe i just needed to do it again from scratch. oh well, thanks for all the help and suggestions, though
