Problems with HDD after reinstalling Windows XP

I just reinstalled Windows XP and I reformatted my C drive but after I reinstall windows I can't access my D drive anymore... i can see it but it would tell me that it is not formatted and kindly ask me if i want to format. I have alot of information inside that i wouldn't like to lose so can anybody kindly please advice me.

Edit: BTW, it is two seperate disks and not partitions.

Did you make any changes to the D: partition using XP partition manager?

No, I just formatted drive C. I'm pretty sure I didn't touch drive D at all..

What/s the D: drive filesystem? NTFS/Fat32?

It's a OEM computer... I think Pavilion 8992, off the top of my head..
- P4 1.8GHz
- Geforce2 200
- 768MB SD RAM

Right now D drive is RAW. But I <i>THINK</i> it was FAT32. or 16.

Make sure the D partition is NOT a primary partition. If it is only an extended logical partition and you still cannot access this partition, then use PartitionMagic or BootIt NG to create a primary active partition on that HDD and use this drive to boot. Remove the other drive.

Also check your current setup and make sure the boot drive is set to MASTER and the other drive to SLAVE. Go into BIOS and set both drives to AUTO detect. Some DELL PCs may require the use of CABLE SELECT at both drives.

SATA drives don't have MASTER/SLAVE.

You may also want to reset CMOS.

But right now D drive is a raw partition.. How do I check if it's an extended logical partition? I'll try Partition Magic or Boot It NG (are they freeware?)

BTW it's a HP PC. Not overclocked. I'll try out your suggestions as soon as I get the chance. -.- Thanks a ton for your help. Looks promising..
