problems with IP assignments

I have a problem that none of the tech support people at any of the hardware I have can resolve. I am using a SMC Barricade 7004ABR router and have three pcs and one Sunrocket gizmo connected to it. The "gizmo" is plugged into the upload link since it doesn't work in front of the router.

Whenever I use Sunrocket, my pc gets knocked from the internet. The other two pcs are able to use the net without a problem. I have come to discover that the IP address of my pc and the "gizmo" are the same, so no wonder I'm having issues. But, going into my pc and setting a static IP doesn't work. (My network card is Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC.)

Can anyone give me some suggestions to fix this, please?
Thanks in advance.

Are you using all static addressing? When you say you changed the IP of your pc, what exactly did you change? Did you enter your subnet mask, defalt gateway, and dsn servers or just your ip address?

Jlazzaro - thanks for the reply.

I went into LAN settings and changed the TCP/IP settings to use the following IP address, and entered what IP I wanted the pc to have, as well as the subnet, gateway, and DNS numbers from my router.

When I did that, I was immediately booted from the internet. (I've also tried ipconfig /release and /renew, but no results.) I tried going into the gizmo and resetting it's IP address to a static one, but that didn't work either. I've unplugged everything, rebooted, and nothing has worked.

*sigh* !!

UPDATE

I've now successfully set my pc to a static IP, but the problem of not being able to use the net on it continues. I am puzzled why it's only this PC that cannot access the net while the Sunrocket phone is in use. Also, I cannot log into the Sunrocket "gizmo" now. I'm not sure if that has something to do with my IP being changed or what the problem is.

is the port where you can not to the upload link share the same port as the one that your pc is using. Did you try a different router? I had a SMC before and sometimes the QA is a little flaky. I'll try another rounter first to see if it happens. Most like, its something is cross within the SMC.

This is a trick question. There is NO "Upload" or "Uplink" port on a SMC 7004ABR router. Here's the product manual, on SMC's web site.

There are only four LAN ports, plus a WAN port, a printer port, and a COM port on the back side of this router.

You are likely connecting the "Gizmo" to the WAN port, which is going to totally mess things up.

If this is your only router, the WAN port should be connected to your Internet connection and all your PCs and the "Gizmo" should be connected to the LAN ports. If you don't have enough LAN ports for all your devices, then buy a $10 switch and use it as an "extension cord" to create additional hookups.

HDKturboKID: I am thinking that you're right. It has to be something w/the barricade, but I don't get it. Of course, SMC says it's not their problem.

RebateMonger: Page two of the link you sent says: "Hardware Setup
1. Connecting Computers: Connect computers directly to the
Barricade on ports 1-4 on the front panel. If you have more than 4
computers to plug in, connect a hub or a switch (using its uplink port)
and connect additional computers to that device."

Port #4 must be the uplink port.

But, I'm not connecting the Gizmo to the WAN.

My setup is this:

cable modem --> WAN port on back of SMC barricade

PC #1 in 1st LAN port (in front of barricade)
PC #2 in 2nd LAN port (in front of barricade)
PC #3 in 3rd LAN port (in front of barricade)
Gizmo in 4th LAN port (in front of barricade)

The Gizmo did not work behind the router in any other port than #4. Therefore, I thought it was the upload.

The WAN is taken by the cable modem, not the Gizmo. In fact, when I first set the system up based on what Sunrocket recommended, it did not work. They want you to go from the cable modem to the Gizmo then from the Gizmo to the router. The only way for the service to work is to have the Gizmo behind the router, not in front of it. I read the "solution" of putting it behind the router from a website. However, I haven't read of anyone having this problem.

I have to conclude that somehow, I need to change something in the router, but what?

Thanks for the replies.

Sounds more like the VOIP is setting up a VPN connection with split tunneling. So, while it is enabled, you can only use the VPN network that the VOIP setup. All others would be blocked. See anything in the VOIP software's help about VPN or split tunnelling?

gsellis, thanks for the reply. There really isn't any software documentation for this Gizmo other than how to set it up. (Which, btw, didn't work for me or a lot of others!) I have continued to call Sunrocket about this issue.

I finally got a girl the other night who told me how to reset the Gizmo through the phone. (The Gizmo doesn't have a reset button.) She also tried to push an upgrade to it, but when we hung up it was still "processing." I don't know which of those did the trick but, at least for now, I am able to use both the net and the Sunrocket phone. I hope it lasts!

I could have been saved a lot of frustration if only the first calls I made would have done what this girl did. I'm still waiting for their level 2 techs to call me because we couldn't log into the Gizmo that night. I asked for a new one, but as you can imagine, they are hesitant to send one.

Thanks again!
