I just recently purchased a new MSI neo2 platinum mobo and 3200+ winchester as an upgrade from my old athlon xp setup. When I first put it together, I formatted my primary hitachi sata harddrive and installed windows only to have problems booting and corrupt partition tables. I ran hitachi's disk utility and it failed so I RMA'd it and am waiting for a replacement.
In the meantime a friend let me borrow a WD pata harddrive to use temporarily. I tried installing windows on it and I got a blue screen stop error durning the installation. I tried again and the same thing happened. I then booted using a boot cd that has memtest and a linux-based prime cpu stability test. I ran the cpu test first only to have it run for a couple minutes before the system locked up. I rebooted to the cd and ran memtest and it came up with an error within the first 5 minutes of the test.
So thats where I am now. The mobo and cpu are the only two new things in the system. The ram is geil pc-3200 which I was using with my athlon xp mobo and was 100% memtest stable in that system. The psu is a 550w TTGI modular supply with perfectly solid rails. I am using a zalman cnps-7000b heatsink for the cpu and the temp in the bios shows 40C. I have the latest official MSI bios and all settings are the optimized defaults.
Could this problem be a faulty mobo or cpu? The ram was stable in my last system so I dont see how it could be the issue here. I am open to any and all suggestions as to what might be causing the problem. Thanks in advance.
