if you have a problem with the way people perceive you because of your wealth, why on earth would you have a 5400 sf new house built, own a 9 plex, have timeshare, exotic vacations, etc. ?????

You are what you show to people. People see these things and observe that you are very financially affluent. I do not see how it is a big surprise ???

Holy cow... another Fairbanks ATOTer

To answer the OP's question: Yes... From personal experience, there will always be people who give you the evil eye because you have more than they do. There is nothing you can do about it. Just keep doing your thing and be happy with your life.

Many times people have looked at my car or my vacation schedule and said how lucky I was. (Lucky as in I didn't earn it) When I try to talk to them and explain how I do it they don't even want to listen. I tell them I work seven days a week and the tell me I'm crazy. So I figure if you hate my life more than you love your own and have no desire to learn how I did it then oh well...

I'm not against you here but would like to point out a couple things.

1. People's perception of you comes from what YOU show them. A 5400 sq. ft. house is showing them a lot.

2. You stated that you guys do not go out of your way to let people know how much you make or about things like the "timeshares in exoctic places." Seems to me that you have done just the opposite here. You have gone completely out of your way to tell us exactly how much you make and what you have.

Right on the mark.
You can't wait for an excuse to let people know how well you're doing, this thread being a case in point. Oh poor me, people don't like me cause I'm rich, whatever shall I do?

I see why they don't like you.

Heh, i wouldn't worry too much about what people think.

Sounds like you guys are enjoying your life, which is what matters.

Ok so you make good money and you and your wife are happy and sucessful... your real friends will still be there and who gives a crap what anybody else thinks. Sounds like you worked hard for your money and actually got what you deserve.

You are a lucky man so enjoy life and put some $$$ aside for the rough patches in the future.

Agreed. This is just another ATOT bragging thread. The OP had to go through EVERY detail of how he is so well off. He could have asked 'People are jealous of my lot in life, how can I change the perception?' But no.

5400 square feet is not a house. It is a compound. As in, "Federal agents surrounded the pinion9 compound today."

Let me preface this by saying this is not a bragging thread. I will keep details at a minimum.

My wife and I are 25. We both have very good jobs. I started in my current job at the bottom in college making like $10/hr. However, I worked hard and got my degree. Now I have a position of extreme responsibility, work 50+ hours a week, and am on call nearly 24/7. Together my wife and I make around 170K/year (good in Alaska.) Again, this is through hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. This didn't just land on us.

We just bought property and started building a house that is about 5400 sq. ft. We love being at home, so we don't have a problem having a large house payment. We got the down payment by saving and also busting our asses for 3 years owning and managing a 9-plex. We are doing some of the work on the house ourselves.

We have nice vehicles (practical though. She drives a new Montana and I have a Tracer and an '00 F350) We also have a timeshare and vacation in somewhat exotic places. But again, this is not without sacrifice.

We also don't talk about how much we make, flaunt it, etc. My wife will go out of her way to turn paychecks over, etc. if guests are coming over. We don't go overboard with Christmas/Birthdays. We don't showboat.

However, since we do own nice things and are building a large house, many people seem to think that we think we are better than them. They make comments about the large house, etc. etc. Is there anything we can do to change the perception, or is envy always going to be a part of being succesful?

Cliffs:
Wife and I are 25
Make ~170K year busting our asses working, going to school, etc.
Builind a nice house, own nice things, but do not flaunt the fact that we are doing well.
People seem to have a perception that we think we are better than them.
How can we change this?

It could be envy, but it could also be that your perceptions are the ones that are flawed. Some people are just offended by materialism, not because of jealousy, but out of differing values. I'm not saying that's true in this case, just offering that you should consider all sides carefully.

If it is the perception of others, then I'm not sure what you can do beyond being the best people you can be, and letting the negative nelly's leave your lives on their own. There's really no point in discussions with small-minded people. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him think.

So everyone in LA makes $500k a year or more?

$170k for 2 people is $85k per person. People make that their first year out of college.

I beg to differ, you are implying that most 22 year olds right out of college make $85k. That's what pharmacists make at 24 and 6 years of school. There are a SELECT few that hit $85k right out of school, and that is in high cost of living areas like LA and NY. The VAST majority of the country is going to be a lot lower.

You think first year teachers, english majors, any government worker, etc makes $85k right out of school?

In fact, to be precise, 2004 statistics showed 10,399,000 total persons with income over 85k annually. That's about 10 million out of about 300 million. And that's not right out of school, that's total in the country. 3% of Americans make 85k per year or more. Just in case your math is as bad as your sociology, that's 97% that make less.

you're a liar, because 170K is not a lot of money. You're middle class. Congrats.

In sincerely doubt everything you say because it doesn't jive with reality. Especially the 5400 foot home.

2nd, you're stupid to buy a 400k home on that rather low income level.

let's see how many more lies you have. You mentioned nothing about what the land cost.

We've already established that his income places him in the top 1% of America. That's hardly middle class. In fact, it's the very definition of elite.

Jealousy is an emotion that's hard-wired into the human brain.

That's why a lot of us gossip about Donald Trump and Paris Hilton,

and that's how the media makes its billions of dollars.

So just focus on enjoying your fine life, and let others gossip and envy. It's natural.

You earned the right. You earned all of it with effort, unlike Paris.
