I was reading on FW about how some seagate 7200.8's are known to have a lot of problems... do you guys know if there's any credence to this claim? As far as I know, seagate is a very good manufactuer, and offer 5yr warranty. I'm looking at the 300gb pata100 7200, 16mb cache (ST3300631A-RK), which happens to be 7200.8. Has anyone else heard of any problems with this line? or can I safely assume that somebody didn't know what they're talking about, and i'll be just fine with this drive?

Thanks!

Mine failed after 1 month of use(started using it christmast failed a week ago). It was a 300GB SATA hard drive 7200.8. Their support was nothing to write home about IMO either. I don't think I will ever buy another of their drives.

I've got two Seagate 7200.8 250 gig drives (SATA). I've had them since last summer and they haven't given me any sort of problems at all.

Take it for what it's worth; I know lately that Seagate has been seen as quality. Hitachi makes good drives, and apparently so does Western Digital. I'm just a little bit wary about them since I had a drive die on me a while back. I mean... it's long enough that it shouldn't matter anymore, but hardware preferences are always about personal experiences, so I thought I'd throw mine in there.

There have definitely been some issues with 7200.8 drives. From what I've read, it looks like teething problems with their new factory. I can vouch for different drives of the same model sounding and feeling very different 9which is usually not a good sign), but no failures.

IMO: get it, and just make sure important stuff is backed up (which is no different than getting any other HDD).

Hey guys -- I just found the deal (via AT) for a Seagate 300gb 7200.9 sata drive, ncq for $130. Is that a better bet than the 7200.8 I was previously looking at? Or all in all should I just suck it up and take the 7200.8? keep in mind I plan to use this drive in a usb enclosure, so speed probably isn't an issue. I just need something that will WORK -- out of the box.

Go with the 7200.9. Supposed to be a bit noisier but, according to other's opinions, more reliable. I have systems with both and no problems thus far.

Phew... last night my 7200.7 200GB died on me... glad I'm not alone. So the 7200.8 is an okay replacement? Bearing in mind that I have to pick one up on the way home from work. Ie 2 hours I don't expect a reply to this.

[edit]My original post on the subject.

[edit again]No wait... there are problems with the 7200.8... dang.

I had a SATA 300GB 7200.8 in my HTPC box ( VCR style case ). The only prob I had with it was heat. It got so hot, it would almost burn your skin. Works fine in a high ventilation case.

I have a Seagate 200GB 7200.7 and I am think of purchasing a second Seagate 200GB. The barcode label is missing off the original box, as I sent it in for a rebate. When I go to purchase a second Seagate 200GB will I be able to tell from the box if it is an 7200.7?

I now use *only* Seagate drives in the computers that I build, support, or personally use. I've had many other kinds of drives fail frequently, and have had poor support from many manufacturers. I've had a couple of Seagates fail at past jobs, but probably less than any others, and the support has been awesome. That, coupled with their 5 year warranty, makes me like them.

I have always used WD hard drives. I have only had a few fail, but the problem is that their recertifieds always seem to fail quickly, too, so once a drive goes, you're better off just buying a new one.

I'm considering getting Seagate for for future builds because NewEgg will swap your drive for you, so hopefully there won't be any factory refurbs from them!
