Well it's a compaq POS . i reformatted the hard drive. before it had 2 partitions C, and D. I deleted both and then reformatted the drive to just C with NTFS. I think the operating system on it before was Win98. So after i reformatted the hard drive and setup the partitions windows XP CD proceded to copy over the drivers for the install. AFter that it reboots itself and this is where my trouble begins. right after rebooting and not hitting any key to boot from the CD, it gives me this "Couldn't open Multi(0)Disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)" and then something like NLTDR Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1). Anyone know what the problem might be?? i don't have any recovery CDs so before i order some i was wondering if anyone knew how to resolve this issue.

thank you

Most of the references to this I've found (and you're not alone with this problem with Compaqs and this issue) have to do with the fact that Compaq likes to use "Cable Select" as a jumper position on their hard drives, or no jumper pin whatsoever.

The suggested fix is to look at the hard drive, determine where the jumper pin is currently, and make sure it's set for Master, not CS (cable select). And, of course, if there is no jumper pin, get one and place it in the master position.

There should bea diagram on the drive that tells you which position is the Master position.

Is the drive plugged onto the connector furthest from the mobo? If not, then try that.

Unplug all other IDE drives.
Try that.

If not, did you delete the existing old partitions correctly?
That might cause problems if you didn't.

Try with something like Acronis Disk Director - see if you can RE-partition/format.

Here's what I think is going on. Compaqs and HP's have hidden non-dos partitions on their hard drives that are there for restore purposes.

Now, you might be thinking, hey, I'll just go back and wipe that thing, too. Might not be easy, first of all, and secondly, these things are usually tied into the computer's bios. So, even if you could wipe it, it might affect the bios somehow. Not good.

Here's what I would suggest first. Since you are using NTFS, managing partitions is going to be a little dicey. You can download and burn Knoppix, a CD based Linux that can manage partitions here:

http://source.rfc822.org/pub/mirror/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V3.7-2004-12-08-EN.iso

You can also edit the boot.ini file as an experiment and change partition (1) to (2) and see if it takes.

had a compaq drive once. In my case I just wiped the c drive I believe and left the recovery portion D alone.
Installed xp on the wiped part.
and then later on deleted the d: partition and added it to C

I have a 5008us and found references (google web and google groups) that said it required a bios update to run XP. I think ? the bios can't read ntfs until the system boots, which it can't because it can't read ntfs. I also deleted the c and d drives and reformated

I googled for hp compaq support and found the site to get the bios before I wiped the drive. They have a "run from winme" program that I used. All went well. XP installed fine.

Here is the site for bios instuctions http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu...c00007682&product=92873&dlc=en&lang=en

Here is the site for the bios http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/prev...roduct=92873&dlc=en&softwareitem=35900

Try to use your exact system type if at all possible when checking for the bios at the Compaq site.

One thing i did notice is that the bios says it's a 686C3 bios pack and the other newer bios say something different. is there a new bios for the 686C3 i can't seem to find any

The bios can't read ntfs? I don't know if I'm buying that. The bios is just reading the drive's parameters and what not, not the file system.

Speaking of parameters, XXervio, did you ever go back into the bios after you partitioned and formatted to update its settings?

For example, as far as it knew, you had a drive with two partitions on it before. Is it possible that it hasn't auto-detected your new partitioning arrangement? In other words, can you go back into it and have it auto-detect your new drive parameters and save the changes, then try to boot?

Also, at some point, you could just go through the installation process again, but this time use a Win98 boot disk to FDISK and remove your current partition. Then, repartition but with FAT32. Install XP. Chances are it will be fine.

Then, after you've got XP installed and all is well, you can always use the "Convert" command from XP to convert to NTFS. Even that, though, should be done efficiently.
Read here for more info on why:

try this for a 686Y2 family rompaq http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/soft...g=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=92873&os=228

The instructions say to run the downloaded program under windows and create a floppy, and use that floppy to boot from on the 5000T.

I had checked google groups and found several people that tried to install xp on the 5000 series and it started to work until the reboot. They found that the bios upgrade solved their problems, so I upgraded the bios before the install of xp and all went well on my 5008US.

Let me just say that I'm not one to argue with success. In other words, if this bios will solve the issue, that's great, and I'm all for it.

That said, here's what this bios changes, according to the info:

"Adds support for up to 3GB of memory. Adds support for Pentium C1 stepping microprocessors. Adds support for Celeron B1 stepping microprocessors. Updates the PXE ROM to version 4.1.08 for integrated Intel NIC. "

Now, unless there's undocumented changes this bios brings, I don't see anything there that would bring about hard drive boot capability for XP.

So, again, if this works, then don't waste a minute and give it a go. But Compaq certainly didn't do a good job in promoting that this somehow provided the ability to boot XP drives.

I will say, however, that if this bios is not meant for this "family" of pc's, then you might be asking for trouble by installing it.

ok after messing around with this computer for almost a week, i finally found the problem. Not sure whoever had the computer before me and i am pretty sure compaq did it. Switched the IDE cables around. so the hard drive was on the secondary channel. After i switched them around everything booted up fine and is installing great.
