Problems with Wireless NIC

I just got a SMC 2602W wireless PCI card for my desktop. I loaded the newest drivers and utility software from the SMC website first thing. I've configured it in Ad Hoc mode.

I have a Cisco Aironet 350 card in my laptop, I set it to Ad Hoc with the same SSID and got the two to see each other. Enabled Internet Sharing on my desktop's wired NIC interface (goes to cable modem) and the sharing was working over wireless.

Trouble is, the connection seems to be dropped every few minutes. On the desktop all of a sudden the "Network Connection Unplugged" icon comes up for the wireless card on Win2k. If I go into the SMC utility and hit Rescan or disable/enable radio it goes away and the connection is re-established. But then 30 seconds to 5 minutes later it goes back to "Unplugged"

Anyone seen this before? I know the Cisco card in my laptop is fine because I use it at work with no problems, I am wondering if the SMC card is defective. When I purchased it, I was told it was manufacturer refurbished so I'm starting to wonder...

Regarding your message, I just recently started using wireless network at home. and i am using win2k. Sometimes the disconnect shows up. The only reason I can think of but it might not be your case, that in your home somewhere, you have a 2.4Ghz home appliance (such as 2.4 Ghz phone) lying around somewhere. and since they are on the same frequency, it might do a little bit "fighting" over same wave.

However, there are something that you want to try, perhaps a different channel. Hope that will help

I switched channels and things do seem to be working much better. Also I got the 128 bit wep encryption working which I was previously having trouble with. Now if only I could get some connection sharing software that would work with with my laptops vpn client (see my other thread in this forum)
