problems with xp and alg.exe

I am having a big problem with my system. I think I've isolated it to alg.exe. Whenever i reboot my system, if I do not close alg.exe within i'd say about 3 seconds of windows loading up then i can't close it, which then leads me to my next problem, which is that if I don't close it, then my system reboots after about 3 minutes. I do not know what to do. I've scanned it to see if it's some type of virus, but nothing showed up(I have latest defs). Is there a way to stop alg.exe from loading, or some way to slove this problem. Are there any others out there having the same problem as me, or am I the only one.


O btw, I'm running Windows XP, I have latest bios and everything up to date and such.

A simple search on google shows that alg.exe is Application Layer Gateway Service. Its part of WinXP. It is used for support for 3rd party plugins for IFC and ICS.

Do you have XP's firewall turned on? Or using Internet Connection Sharing? This is where alg.exe is comming from.

I just reinstalled/reformatted a fresh copy of WPX prior to the SP being available. When I reinstalled zone alarm it keeps asking if I want ALG to act as my server? I was worried about XP accessing the net to do the strange downloads, etc through the media player updates, so I said NO. I haven't noticed any bad effects from it.

Not sure if this helps, just my experience.

Maybe try removing it from your startup folder? Or disabling it in msconfig? That way it wouldn't run at all.
