problmes running halo

i got the following error when running halo: "a problem occured initializing direct3d. hardware acceleration may be disabled, run dxdiag"

any ideas? rig in sig

Bump because I'm having the same problem with the demo. Everything as far as DX is concerned looks good, all my drivers are current, so WTF?

Ok, fixed it by putting -vidmode 1024,768,100 in the command line. After playing a bit it doesn't seem like I was missing much. Bah.

In start go to "Windows Update". Let it check your system for all updates. It should show you an update for your video card driver. Install it and restart your computer. Now go into your Halo folder... there should be a file named "haloupdate", click on it and let Halo update itself. After that is done run Halo.exe (desktop shortcut).

This happened to me too and I have the retial version, which I bought from CompUSA for $46.99.

EDIT: Dang thought this was posted today, may have fixed it already.

Also, if anyone is using RivaTuner etc... refresh rate fix... you may have to do a comman line.

Example: "C:\Games\Halo\halo.exe" -vidmode 1024,768,85

This should get you into the game if you are having the same problem.

heh i BOUGHT halo and i used to get that error message. seems to have gone now after reinstalling cats several times (weird eh?)

Two things....

You will need DirectX 9.b , available at microsoft.com/directx (windows update did not suggest that update for me)

And the latest Detonator drivers if you have an nvidia vid card.

Didn't finish MOH Breakthrough yet, just bought Halo (which rocks imho) and now CS-CZ is coming out!
I need a vacation from life, lol!

I have 3 copys of halo at my house, one for each computer. I love the game. I can even play online btw i have 56k dial-up. I have almost no lag online its GREAT.

before you start saying i should get high speed internet, I cant. I live too far away.

For a quick and easy fix right click on the Halo.exe and go to the compatibility tab and click the check box to run it in 98 compatibility mode. Will work like a charm.

i bought it from best buy for $49.99.
shadows and spectacular is disabled in my game and i am running a geforce4 and i have this on my other machine at my dads with geforce3 and it has those enabled. its strange. aliens, etc, master chief looks like crap and i dont know how to enable it.
