i just put together a s939 a64 3000+ with the amd hsf running on a k8n neo2 plat. with no oc whatsoever and all voltages as it should be, prime95 crashes. what gives?

this occured 1h 19m into the torture test ... i believe it resulted in a pc reboot? (i got the login screen when i got back)

[Mon Nov 22 14:49:57 2004]
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.498046875, expected less than 0.4
Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file.

this occured less than 1m into the torture test!

[Mon Nov 22 18:17:28 2004]
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4
Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file.

what gives?

msi's corecenter says that my vcore is 1.36v and cputemp is ~53c during the prime95. how accurate are these numbers?

I would try bumping the Vcore up a tick or so. Shoot, bump up your RAM Voltage also by one.
Then try it again. Let us know.

i did 200fsb and 1.4v vcore (ie. no oc) and it failed IMMEDIATELY! i've also had the whole pc reset ...

my temps r pretty good (given the fact that i'm using the amd hsf) -- about 47c at 200fsb@1.4v and 54c when i oc it.

temps should not be an issue.

try some different memory, or if you're running 2 sticks, try one, then the other to see if it makes any difference.

i was running prime95 in the background and the pc rebooted while i was trying to post this msg

anyway cainam, thanks for the suggestion. unfortunately, i only hv 1 stick of 512mb kingmax ... i'll see if i can borrow another stick.

amdbloke, i'm not sure how hot the cpu is supposed to be ... but i dont recall seeing it break 55 deg celsius ever.

What version of the bios are you running? I highly recommend the 1.36 beta if you are using the msi k8n neo2. Also, try shifting your memory chip between the different slots, cause my motherboard's dimm 3 or 4 slot is bad and causes random reboots.

i sincerely doubt the 1.3 bios is the issue. that's what i'm running, and i'm currently @ 270mhz FSB 1:1 & HTT (3x) - the highest I was able to get with stock voltage.

since you only have 1 stick, if you've already relaxed the memory timing I can only suggest you borrow some good ram and try it.. if you haven't tried relaxing the timings, do so...

as far for testing, short of an actual memory tester, swapping and checking w/ software is the only way i know.. try memtest or memtest 86 and see what happens...

The reason I recommended a bios > 1.3, hence the beta bios is because of a known issue with the HTT setting. If you try to adjust it in a certain way, the bios will lock up on you. The 1.36 beta bios also have the largest selection of voltages if you care about overclocking.

cainam, i tried memtest (the windows ver, not the dos) and did a memtest of available mem. it kept going past 100%, but up until 100% i had about 3 errors. i dont suppose thats normal right? i can try to borrow/swap some memory from my housemate temporarily tonight to see what happens ...

ps. i hv my mem settings on auto. is that conservative enough?

thanks for the update. i might try that later then. btw, does the voltage get any better? i can adjust vcore to 1.45v in the bios, but cpuid/cpucore seems to always read about 1.4v (ie. 0.05v lower) when that happens. i almost always have to use the +3.3% thingy on the bios.

hmm.. i've not experienced this "known issue". could you offer some links? thanks.

i know these arn't popular threads, but this is just what i found on the msi forums. Check them out for more interesting information.

tyvm for the links.

looks like a very few experience not being able to change HTT setting in the bios(i've not had this issue), but can simply workaround by using the +/- numpad key.
