Probs with Athlon and Volcano 7+?

I recently went to a PCclub and asked to see a Volcano 7+. When I got it, the guy told me that he had users experience problems with Volcano 7+s and Athlon chips. He said something to the effect of a small die making the large heatsink slip off or something like that. I'm sure with careful installation that shouldn't be a problem but I'm curious if anyone has had that problem with their Volcano 7+ and AMD Athlon core.

Ok, as I havent turned on my computer yet because I am still waiting for my case keyboard and mouse from TCWO take this for what its worth I guess..

I got EVERYTHING for it but these parts mentioned above mid-last week and couldnt stand it any longer so I decided I had to put on my CPU and HSF on my GA7VRXP that I pray will work with no problem :Q! Anyway though, if people really did complain if it 'slipping off the core' they must not have known WTF they were doing. I got one of the updated ones that utilizes all 3 socket clips and it was EASY. I had no problems what so ever. It looks like a really nice fan, and is really heavy since its got all that copper. THis was the first HSF isntallation I did and it was much easier than I thought..

i didn't have such an easy time getting that 7+ on with the 3 clip. it was a pain in the @ss! just be careful, because that heatsink is heavy. i didn't have any probs with it "slipping" off, just hard time getting it seated properly.

Personally, I do not like the Volcano 7. When all of these sites tested the Volcano 7, they did so on a flat bench top and not mounted in a case.

If you are using the Volcano 7 with the single clip, the heatsink "rocks back" off of the die under it's own weight. I've had customers kill three CPU's so far with this heatsink.

The Volcano 7 with three clips doesn't do this, but is a pain to install. Only had one customer kill a chip with this one (put the clip together wrong).

Why not just get a heatsink that cools just as good that doesn't have any issues like the Coolermaster HCC-002 or a Swiftech w/ copper core?

be very careful when you post like that. are you referring to the blue volcano 7, or the all copper 7+?

the 7+ is great on my p4, but i was wondering just how the heck it would stay on an amd chip. i have 4 seperate clipping points at the corners, so mine doesn't move at all.

When I installed my Volcano 7+, I was pretty new to building computers. It installed just fine, and it works great. It didn't "slip" off the die during installation. As long as you're careful you'll be okay. You could always use a shim to help steady the installation. As for stability, the single clip works great for me. If you can find the three clip version, even better!

Personally i found the installation of the V7+ easier than the stock HS/F for my 1800+, just be sure when clipping on the back clip that it is all the way down, like angled i mean, and you'll clip onto the back easy.
