Proc Fried...whats next

Okay, the otherday somehow I overlooked the fact that one of the clips had worked it's way off in the laborious process of putting the other on (for the Huge Volcano 7 with a powersupply in the way). Power on---whats that smell!?!? DAMN!

I bought the 1800+ OEM processor from MonarchComputer which advertises a 3 year warranty but has a clause in the terms stating "It doesn't cover physical damage"!! I emailed em and they're pointing to that.

Does anyone know what the best way to work this out might be? Refuse to pay through credit card co?

Or if worst comes to worst, how do the Retail warranties work, my friend is also looking for a cpu and is willing to buy another (retail) 1800+ (with me pitching in) and I get the warranty. Anyone know if it would be possible to send my burnt proc in under the other proc's warranty?

Also I read that a frying proc can fry the mobo in the process...is there any way I can tell this without a proc to install? whats a mobo suppose to do when there is no proc installed and it's turned on?

Any help is greatly appreciated! This situation sucks, feel so stupid for this...

switching warrenties is shifty, underhanded, and most likley not work. I have yet to see a processor warranty cover accidental over-heating it. Your best bet is with the store you bought it from, and with them it looks like you might be stuck...however if you pester them enough, they will either give it to you, or issue a restraining order. Whats the worst that can happen?

Gotta agree with KBTibbs,

Don't give up so easily on the vendor - remember, squeaky wheel gets the grease... so don't be afraid to press them a little. You've got nothing to lose.

You can try an RMA at AMD, i've heard of some people getting replacements ("squeaky wheels"... remember?) but don't recall if that works with OEM or Retail models, or both...

Yes CC company might be an option.

Exhaust all your options before trying your "swap". The warranty is usually tied to the serial number of the product, and the manufacturer will be able to tell what model (OEM, Retail, etc.) you have when they see the serial number on it.

Good luck thadk!

I thought that AMD retail processor warrantys covered overheats... am I wrong?

What else can go wrong with a proccessor exactly excepting heat problems?

<<however if you pester them enough, they will either give it to you, or issue a restraining order. Whats the worst that can happen?

What exactly does a restraining order do to me? Can't use their site or what...

<< Dude, you just learned an expensive lesson. Unfortunately you're gonna have to eat this one.

unfortunarly yes, I did...but I'll try all my options, for 170 bucks it's worth it.

AMD RMAs are for retail arn't they?

yeah, I just noticed the serial number on the chip so the warranty thing likely won't work...do retails come with warranty cards or something? whats on them?
gah, yep...

<< AMD warrants that processors sold through the AMD Processor in a Box Program, which have a ?qualifying? serial number , when properly installed and used, will be free from defects in material and workmanship and will substantially conform to AMD's publicly available specifications for a period of three (3) years after the date the AMD processor was purchased.

Dude you burned up the CPU through your own negligence, except that, and get on with buying a new one. Trying to get someone else to cover your loss because of your own actions says a lot about your personality in general.

It is not the stores fault or AMD'sd that you weren't paying attention and fried your CPU. Plain and simple.

Cuular, do you check the heat sink clips on your processor regularly?

I didn't think so.

While I am inclined to agree that Thadk didn't assemble the components correctly, it's simply rude to label someone as careless or negligent for what appears to have been an honest mistake.

Cut the guy some slack, dude.

Agreed. The last thing the guy wants to get from his question is more grief. "Lighten up Francis" - Sgt. Hulka

Thanks for the help (and understanding of the situation) people...guess I'm just gonna sink the cash again so I can get my almost-finshed box back up dispite the letdown and try to work on Monarch CS for the processor warranty.

Anandtech rocks All the hot deals I found here probably covered the proc anyway, I suppose.

gsaldivar,
Yes it probably was an just honest mistake. So what? That doesn't mean it wasn't also careless and negligent. Either he knew how important having the HS/F attached was but failed to check, or he didn't know, in which case he was taking a chance putting it together by himself. There should be no need to check your HS clips regularly if you do it just once when you finish to make sure it's on securely. It's a tough break and if he can get the retailer to replace it, great, but it's only his own fault and AMD or MonarchComputers doesn't owe him anything.

Thadk, if you're worried about your MB being fried you might want to try a cheap duron and see how that goes.

Good Luck,
D.
