Well for starters, some sockets are AMD, and some are Intel. S478 is Intel, although this isn't really helpful, maybe this will give you a general idea of why some are named differently.

The original p4's used socket 423. Socket 478 was used for p4's up until recently. Socket 775(also known as lga775 and socket T) is the new one for use with the Prescott P4's using the new PR system, for example the P4 540 which is the 3.2ghz p4 that uses lga775. socket 602 is for Xeon's. The number for the socket indicates the number of pins that are on the CPU, so a cpu for socket 478, has 478 pins, lga775..775 pins, etc.

No, Intel has a ton, dating back from their first processors.

Intel

Socket 423 PGA
Socket 478 PGA
Socket 775 LGA

AMD

Socket A (462)
Socket 754
Socket 939
Socket 940

This is the recent list of sockets for the average consumer.

About the pin count, the easiest way to say it is this. A higher pint count enabled more I/O (Input Ouput) Operations, in other words, more communication to the rest of the system. If your not overclocking, then it does not matter which socket you go with LGA 775 or PGA 478. Whatever one floats your boat!!!, Prescott is the only LGA supported CPU. Socket 478 swings both ways, Northwood and Prescott. If you want under 3.2 GHz, then get a Socket 478 board with a Northwood Pentium 4. If you want above then go with LGA.

You want bang for buck, get a Athlon 64 Socket 939 processor.

Yep a good idea to stick with the P4 for that sortof thing, that is unless your getting an FX!! The reason I said to go for A64 is because their is a lot of technical mumbo jumbo that shows the 64 to be designed better. ALU and FPU performance increases do to a greater ammount of instructions per clock cycle and bla bla bla bla BLA BLA BLA!!! better cache prefetch BLA BLA smaller stage depth BLA BLA BLA you get the picture. Only kidding, any way the FX is a very high end model of the Athlon 64, it costs a fortune so if your not on a budget at all then go for it. The FX is still not as good as the upper model P4's in video editing. Get a P4!

High end Athlon 64, still not as good for video editing but much better at everything else.

If you are doing rendering, if you haven't, check these out...

My opinon is the 550 is the way to go price/performance for 3D rendering. If you give a budget, we could throw some ideas at you. But you are on the right track, 3D rendering or video encoding typically means going Intel. As far as pins go, only concern yourself with either the Intel Socket T(775) or the AMD 939 unless you are on a tighter budget, in which case go with an AMD 754.
