Long story short.

Bought a special online a while back. Wehn DOom 3 was released.
Doom 3
stick of 512 (whcih was on sale at hte time via MIR)
free $20 gift card

I ordered online for in store pcikup. I got to the store early They tol dme to go grab the items and they'd cancel my order and just process the order normally. So, while at the store, I got the three goodies. Most important to note was the $20 gift card.

Several days later, I got a second gift card in the mail as that's how the online order/in-store pickup works as far as I know.

I kept both in my wallet figuring that the one in the mail would be cnceled. Guess what! It wasn't. I used both recently to buy a phone I found in hot deals ($29.99 phone with $30 MIR).

Both were valid even though I should have only gotten one.

Anyone else hav this happen?

Well, maybe.

The theory is that the card gets procesed in real time, so when the order gets canceled in the store, the card is pretty mcuh in the mail. This is a huige comapny and I can only assume this is an automated process via computers and no one can "catch the errro".

Just a guess though.

Did you pay online?

Well, I guess the deal was for online and in store and if you waited a while before cancelling it could happen.

I think I also have another trick. This one would be assuming you knew the upcoming deals that Sunday.

My situation. Last year I bought a 17" Samsung LCD for my wife. Price was something like $379 with a $30 MIR. I purchased online on a Friday or something. We went in on Sunday, and the price was now (I'm guessing, but just to make the point) $429 with a $60 MIR. Point being, they up'd the price and up;d the rebate. So what happened was, I got the $379 price (which is what my internet order said) and the new, higher $60 rebate printed out. I forget exactly what it was, but I do remember it worked out to be like $50-$60 in our favor.

I hope all that makes sense.

Just note that sometimes people did report rebates being denied "because items were returned" even though they were just returned for a price match.

This is not always the case but both rebates + a price match (be it to other store or be it a PM a week or two later at the same store) may backfire when rebates get processed two months later. Of course they don't always check but it's risky doing when large rebates are involved.

I'm surprised they didn't make you wear devil horns and chain you to the restrooms...

CompUSA/D-Link did something similiar to me....

About 5~6 months ago a D-Link router/usb adapter was on sale AR for $20 + tax. I got sent an extra set of rebate checks and I ended up making $3 on the whole thing. I made only one submission, didn't do anythign online or anything funky. After I had already made $3, I got emails saying that more checks for $30 was in the mail -- they never showed up....
A wifi router/adapter and $3 for clicking on a few pages and some paperwork is sweet.

Well, back in 99, I went to home depot and ordered a dishwasher ($400). They give me a piece of paper with the order and they told me to head down to CS and PAY. In my way there I changed my mind, so I walked out. Two days later I had someone at my door delivering my washer.....loool

The reason why they told you they would cancel your online order and process it "normally" is that the person/sales person who helps you collect your items does not get commission via web sales. If they cancel your online order and then ring up the items under their employee sales number, they get commission on the sale.

It's late right now so they're probably closed, but tomorrow I'll try to give Best Buy's customer service a call and see if this is a normal process and routine for how they handle their gift card offers.
