The owner came back to me and told me that of request was too much. I offered to meet him "just above" the middle. I think he will take it but you never know. If $1,000 (middle vs what I ask for) breaks this deal, then I wonder whether the company is stable enough to work for anyway. We'll see.

One of my current co-workers, who I have 100% faith in, told me that the company will counter offer to keep me. Said that they are in such a bind that they have no choice. I really need to get away from that type of work though as I'll just be paid more and still be unhappy.

As much as you seem to dislike this job, will a little more money REALLY make a difference?
Sure, more money is always nice...but IME, once a job gets to the point of "I gotta find a new job," more money doesn't fix that. PLUS, all the time away from home takes a toll on the family life...for good or bad, and more money doesn't make up for the "little things" that you miss while you're on the road.

Here's hoping that the interview went as well as it sounds like...and that you are offered a good job at a decent salary/wage.

I'm in a similar boat. I really don't want to move to take this job offer I received for a minimal increase. I'm ok with my job for the most part - but working out of home is a huge benefit and makes it well worth it.

On paper, this company is offering me an $18k increase. After all is said and done, though, I feel it is most likely worth about $10k MAYBE.

I asked for another $6k, see what happens. The interesting data to add to this though - My wife is interviewing there and flies out tomorrow (I'm going with her). I gave them her resume while I was interviewing. If she gets a job, we're looking at probably a $40k/yr increase which is a no-brainer at that point. But if I get the $6k request AND she gets a job, we'll be livin it up!

I basically made a resolve to accept nothing less than a $3k increase or she gets an offer, at which point I'll take the offer on the table. Only way for me to say yes before they decide on her, though, is to give me the increase.

Good luck!!!

Talked to owner again and he said that the was very busy and waiting to talk to book-keeper to make sure that his budget /workload allowed for a full time new employee. One BIG twist though....while riding to to the job site with my current boss, I noticed that he had the company's business card (one that I'm trying to get a job with) in his car. Don't know what's going on there! :O

Just received an e-mail and was offered the job at the just above middle counter-offered amount. Have already sent an e-mail back and accepted. Talk about the difference a few minutes makes!!!

what?

why not?

I won't be in material handling controls so it doesn't matter. I'll be back to machinery controls. There are no non-competing clauses for that and I didn't sign one!

Controls engineering is so "generic" that there would be no point. The current company might have asked (but didn't) to sign a form to not compete with another material handling company that specializes in certain types of warehouse automation but thank goodness, this new job isn't even close to that (product at old company sort of sucks).

I never submitted an application. This is a small company and I'm not sure they even have an application but they probably do. I heard about this job from word of mouth. A former co-worker (going to school and unemployed) told me that he was emailed by a salesman who told him about the job. He forwarded the email to me and I called the owner and ask about the job. That turned into a 3 hour and 45 minute interview one week later. I'll probably have to fill out some paperwork and do the drug test, etc.

Congrats! May the new job be everything you want it to be.

Thanks everyone for the congrats. I'll try to be a good boy and not do this very often, lol.

My current boss is going to shit a brick on Friday when I give him a 3 weeks notice. He and I have been working together on a project for the past 3 weeks and on the way back to his house (I meet him there every morning because it's halfway between the office and job site), he was telling me about the upcoming, out of town projects that he was going to have me work on. I sat there in silence (oops).

ROFL! When you're in that situation, there's not much you can do...except bite your tongue until you know you have the other job locked in...
Get ready for some massive overtime once you give notice...OR, be ready to get let go. I've worked for both kinds of bosses over the years.

"You're leaving? WTF? I'm gonna work your ass off to get the most from you before you go!"

and

"WTF do you mean you're leaving? Ungrateful bastard! Get off my job...NOW! You're fired!"

<shrug> I almost preferred the last guy...I either got to start the new job sooner...or got some much-needed time off between jobs.

When it really gets fun is when, at the end of the day on Friday...the boss gets the crew together to line out some big new job that's going to start on Monday...then you say,
"oh, by the way, I won't be here on Monday. I have a new job to start. Sorry. Mail my paychecks will ya?"

LOL. The 3rd week of the notice is the cruise (vacation) that I'm going on and scheduled about 3 months ago. Already worked out with new job to start after!

Will start earlier and go on cruise if let go early but would prefer not to start a new job and then leave for vacation (unpaid from new job but still). The new boss said that was fine if necessary but still. I might just fill out paperwork and do some pre-work work before starting (study up on new stuff that I'll be doing, etc).

I really feel bad for my boss. He's looking to hire more staff but can't find qualified people (I've heard this multiple times lately). Not sure his boss is going to let him hire someone until more product is sold, but that's a catch 22 as it takes so much time to get up to speed on these massive size projects. As much as I dislike big chunks of the job, I really like my boss (and "most" of the co-workers) and have lots of respect for him. Friday will be a difficult day, to say the least.

Any advise on what to say, lol?

First of all, mega-congrats, Robert!

As for any advice on what to say to your old boss, just let him know how much you appreciated him and how deeply sorry, on a personal basis, you are to be leaving him in such a tough spot.

If he's as good a guy as you believe, he'll understand.

Again, though, YEE-HAW, score one for one of the truly good guys!

One of the guys in the shop says that he will beg and plead and give a big counter offer. It's more about the environment and type of work than a counter offer at this point.

I'm more nervous about my soon to be old boss than I am about the new job, lol!

By the way Perknose, you're wrong...as usual! (lol)!

Told boss today that I'll be leaving in 3 weeks. I think he already knew. Took is rather well...almost too well (as in "gosh, I'm glad you're leaving"), lol.

Told me that I had to do what I had to do and thanked me for my hard work.

Much better than expected.
