i have an asus p5vd1-c (via pt880 pro/ultra chipset) that does not turn on. when the power button is pressed, the fans jerk as though they were just about to turn on, then nothing. using a multimeter, i can measure the voltage on the processor vrm and for that instant, the voltage goes from zero to 1.something volts (happens too fast for me to read).

when i pull the processor, the board powers up and all the fans spin, but with only the processor and NOTHING else, the board only initiates for a 1/2 second. once it initiates once, pressing the power or reset buttons does not do anything. however, after holding the power button for 4+ seconds (normal atx force shut off), and then pressing power again, makes the fans kick for another 1/2 second as though the board was originally powered, but measuring any point on the board with my multimeter shows 0 voltage....

i've reset cmos, pulled the battery, removed power and let the system set for a couple hours and then tried again.

i have no other 775 boards or processors to try.. all else in the computer is tested as good in my amd setup.

jackwhitter,

I suspect the CPU (You've been overclocking haven't u... :-0)

Disconnect the PSU from the MB and stick those multimeter leads into the end of that cable to test...... try this AT YOUR OWN RISK.

U could also go to Fry's and purchase a cheap PSU checker... for $10 bucks.

U also might be more specific on the details as the following is a bit confusing:

"when i pull the processor, the board powers up and all the fans spin, but with only the processor and NOTHING else, the board only initiates for a 1/2 second. once it initiates once, pressing the power o"

And Yes... U need at least 1 RAM Module in the MB for it to POST

While your at Fry's purchase a PSU to test in your system then return it if its not the PSU.

Check Ebay for a cheap 775 CPU

good luck

i have a psu tester and the psu is good. a computer will turn on and the motherboard will initiate even without ram, and it should generate post code errors. a board and a cpu only should power on and give me some post code errors, at least. whenever i try to power on the board with the cpu in it, the fans and cpu vrm's show a voltage for an instant, then everything powers back down. i was trying to say that the board does not even get to a place where posting is the problem, as the board won't even fully power the devices onboard. none of the mosfets are active... everything is ~0 volts.

with the processor out, the board provides full power for everything to spin up, but th e vrms do not show a correct voltage (not cpu logic to tell them what to do though...)

as for overclocking, i have before, but this was a stock setup. the processor can go quite high, but i was going for stability.

Unless you've over-volted or over-heated or abused the cpu, chances are negligable that the cpu is at fault.

Unless you really abused your cpu its unlikely to have just failed on you ... in fact out of literally 100's of PC's I've never had a cpu fail of its own accord even when I was abusing them, although I've had a couple cooked by failing psu's or from physical damage.

A motherboard is a very complex & fragile piece of equipment & I've had quite a few just die for no apparent reason on me over the years, so I would focus your attention there first unless you stumble across a super-cheap skt-775 cpu.
