Does anyone know how much processor is required to decode H.264 HD video without video card acceleration? Maybe numbers for 720p and 1080p, if possible.
This should answer your question. The short answer is that you'll need at least an E6700 processor to decode 1080p H.264, and even then you'd be awfully close to the edge. Your overclocked E4300 is probably not too far from the edge either.
it also matters what codec pack you use to decode the video. i find that my system (AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+ @ 2.2Ghz with 1GB ram and an NVIDIA 6600) can easily handle 720p h.264 video as long as i use CoreAVC.
depends on bitrate, and what h264 features were used in the video of course, and level of decode quality.
more efficient decoders likepowerdvd/coreavc can do pretty decent with most modern cpus.
