Well, there are over 400 words and phrases that get censored...maybe "OOOOH!" and "UNHHHH!" are among them.

Besides, that's what v-chip, channel-blocking, and locking video cabinets are for.

Unfortunately, these things don't do much other than give parents a false sense that they're somehow "protecting" their kids from the so-called corrupting influences of the big, bad media companies. The fact is, kids will learn more curse words from a single weekend on the playground with their friends than they will from an entire season of NBC prime time programming.

I speak from experience In the mid 70's when I was just a pup in 2nd grade, I got in big trouble at school for cussing too much. Since I only watched about an hour of TV each day, and we only got 5 channels to begin with, the blame certainly didn't fall there. My parents were good-old-fashioned god-fearing Leave It To Beaver types, so they weren't to blame. And I think I had only ever seen about 1 G-rated movie in a theater by that age, so that's out... However, I did have two frequent playmates next door who were both older (one 3 years and one 5 years older) and usually unsupervised. DING DING DING, we have our winner.

Seriously, if I were a parent these days I'd be more concerned about protecting my kids from pervasive advertising than I would be about shielding their ears from the occasional "damn" or "$hit".

You hit it. Unfortunately, there are so many "parents" that use the TV as a babysitter (or simply let their kids "take care of themselves". They are "too busy" to deal with raising their children.

Possibly this filter could be good for parents that use the TV to babysit their kids, but those parents wont have the time or ability to install it. It's a waste. If I thought that I really needed this, I'd just turn off the TV (Which is EXACTLY what I do.).

I am a bit bummed about the way the radio DJs talk these days though. I listen to 102.9 WBLM here in New England a lot. 70 rock for the most part. Years ago, the DJs had some class. Those of today feel that profanity is just "normal" language. I can't listen to WBLM with my 5 year old kids in the car anymore. Bummer! I lose. The radio station loses. And their advertisers lose.

Filters won't work. Turn off the TV. Turn off the radio.

Can it be reprogramed to block really offensive words like Bush and Rumsfeld?

That would make it a really practical device.

You know, books and toys are still the best best method to teach children. TV don't really make you think at all. You just sit there and stare at it for hours and hours.

If you want you can have the kids play computer game. U know one of those Barney "1 + 1 = ?" kinda game.
