How do I take a database written in access and make it run without having access installed on the computer?

How and what program will do this?

Thanks
Dave

im not sure if access has the make executable option, professional might, but i doubt it. If you want an executable that will run on an access db, without access being on that computer, youll need to make your front end in visual basic, and have it make an install package, because it wont be able to access the db unless the db driver gets installed along with the executable.

Train, thanks for the reply....

So I need to get VB? Is what I'm trying to do difficult?
Do you know of any books or Web sites that offer information along this line?

Thanks Again
Dave

no, its not too difficult, if you can program in Access (VBA) you will be able to program in VB pretty easily, its pretty much the same language, you will probably be able to just port your code over and modify it a little to get it to work in VB. I would suggest starting at http://msdn.microsoft.com and looking at thier VB docs. The connection between VB and Access is through ADO, and will give you a lot of freedom to do whatever you want with your DB.

first of all, your database is not written in access. it just uses access as the frontend.

now whether your data is stored in a sql server or simply in an .mdb file, doesn't matter.

what you are asking for is an executable frontend to a database, which is not possible without a compiler, whether it be visual basic or delphi etc.

from your post it seems you are using an access application that someone has written code for.

my only guesses for your solution would involve some code-writing, whether it be in visual basic or asp(meaning you have a web front-end).

if you can't write code, then you're stuck unless you hire someone else to do it.

riteo is correct -- access is just the key to the data warehouse...

You can actually read/write data from an access-format db using ODBC-connectivity and SQL commands. I program for industrial applications and several of our customers use access-format databases. We us ODBC tools to read/write the data without access actually being on the computer. Then they are able to use access to manipulate the data into whatever type of reports they need.

Any ol' app can read/write data from/to access db's - if you have the SQL commands and the ODBC properties setup correctly.

OZEE, thanks for the reply.

You are talking Greek to me, I know how to use Access to make database's but I want to be able to market some of my work but some people might not have Access on their computer. So this is where I need something to make my file a standalone. Is Visual Basic what I need, does Access 2000 have something built in to make it work? Give it to me in street talk.....

Thanks
Dave

hi njload, sorry if i didn't speak plainly enough.

if you tell me your objective, and what you have right now(whether you have a vb app in Access, or you're using the native Access tools), where is the data stored(oracle/sql server/or Access format) i could give my opinion on a solution for you.

basically what you're saying is you want your database to be independant of access, and for that to be possible you either need to know how to program or have someone else who can program.

Okay, tell me if this is correct:

You're good at designing databases and want to be able to show this ability off?

You created the tables in Access and want to show them to someone?

You don't have a front end, just the tables?

Please answer these and we can help.

bunker and riteo, Thanks for the reply: I am just using the tables, forms, reports, macros that are available in Access and saving them on my hard drive as .mdb files. I created a database that I want to sell on eBay but want people to be able to use it even if they don't have access on their computer.

I am using Access 2000.

I hope this makes my goals clearer.

Thanks
Dave

roc, is this an add-on I can get? or do I need to look for a new version of Access?

Thanks for the reply

You need Access Developer edition, like roc said. It has a built in compiler that can make your .mdb a stand alone application. We already use developer edition at work, so I've never had to check if there is an add-on for other versions.

Any help is appreciated.

NJ,
I'm tryin' to figure this out for you. Apparently we have some msdn developer software that includes an add-in for the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) that comes with access. This add-in is called a packager and it takes everything and makes an executable of it. I'm trying to find out exactly what was installed over the top to include this feature.
