Sorry for the double post but there seems to be more people here...

I'm calling on the programming wizards in Excel to help me out...
I need to know how to read a cell in Excel using Visual Basic.
For example..
the content of cell A1 is
123456ABCD

I'm trying to extract just the number part of the cell (123456) and discard the non-numeric characters (ABCD)

I think I have the logic down but I don't even know how to read the contents of a cell, so any help is appreciated. TIA

I am not sure if I am right, but I think you would have to read in each digit one at a time and then use the ASCII value to see if it is a number letter and then save the numbers as another string. Been a while since I played with VB!

I'm guessing once you have the string its not a problem parsing out what you want - but as you said your problem is reading the value from the spreadsheet; I've only integrated VB apps with a database, I'm not sure how it is done in Excel.

I don't have an available, so this is just off the top of my head...

One things for sure, you're going to need to create an instance of the COM object which facilitates all of the required methods. The ProgID for this is Excel.Application... so...

Set oExcel = CreateObject("Excel.Application&quot
Set oExcelWorkbook = oExcel.Worksbooks.Add
Set oExcelWorksheet = oExcelWorkbook.Worksheets.Add

Then you can access individual cells like...

oExcelWorksheet.Cell(x,y).value = "something"

I don't do VBA, so just take the above info as a starting point on where to look for additional info.

Do you need to go down columns to do this?
You need to use the ActiveCell object to read the value such as ActiveCell.Value will grab the value of the cell and ActiveCell.Offset(1,0).Select will move down to the next cell.

Also, this search engine was very helpful for me.

Microsoft Search Engine

Hope this helps, let me know if you need any more info.
