Hey everybody

I am taking a Java course right now and understand it well. Will I be able to understand C++ and possibly C# from my work in this class? Also I am looking at some O'Reilly in a nutshell books to use are they good? Any feedback welcome!

Oh yes, very well. They are both very alike, though Java sucks and C doesnt.

i concur, czar. of course the fact that i've only done C and C++ may leave me somewhat biased

C# looks fun, i'm going to try and do some of it in my spare time.

LOL! Guess that is pretty good. Maybe when we are at 233 Gigahertz processors those Java applets will fly!

Why do people use blanket statements like this :|

i can program in java, the minor things, not able to make any OSes or much of a program from it though...

i cannot understand C++ due to certain syntax differences, and the use of pointers is understandable in terms of theory. but i can't read the non-trivial aspects of the code at all.

Skoorb, I took a java class, it was horrible horrible horrible, compiling and running the java applets we made took forever, even simple programs like "hello world".

skoorb,

I have to agree, Java sucks. The only redeeming feature java has is portability. But its portability is overrated.

I know, like jsp, I like that. But, people I used to work with that had a uni degree in programing, jsp, c and other languages and were working there programing in jsp. They looked a little bit into php and said it seemed much better and much simpler. That is another reason I think Java is the most overrated programing language ever. No offense though

None taken because I don't even work with Java anymore, but the fact is all languages have at least some uses. People say that "VB Sucks" but it's the most popular development platform for various reasons.

skoorb,
You are right there is so much more to java than applets.

Alot of companies do their backend is jsp/servletts with appservers. This is a very popular way to implement enterprise applications. But by the time the appserver gets deployed, it is still tied to the hardware because, the company has invested time and training into the platform. The application may not be tied to the hardware, but the company is because of the investment in training and hardware.

A company is not going to switch hardware platforms on a whim after they invest $500k in hardware and more money on finding/training people to keep the application and hardware up and running. Portability on the back end is overrated.

Answering the original question...

C# is sort of a mix between Java and C++. Going from Java to C# shouldn't be too difficult, at least syntax-wise. I'm not too knowledgeable about the rest of the language, though.

Going from Java to C++, however, may not be as easy. As Mday mentioned, you'll probably have lots of trouble with pointers, since they give you a lot more freedom to screw something up. Templating and the Standard Template Library also don't exist in Java. C++ also has no garbage collection (by default), so you have to have class destructors. And if something crashes, you don't get a nice error message with a backtrace that Java gives you.

Going from C++ to Java is easier.

What's with all the coding threads in OT lately? Did the Software- Programming and Games Forum fall off the face of the Earth?
