Progressive Scan DVD Suggestions?

Hey-
Thinking about getting a Wega, and was looking for suggestions for a DVD player that supports Progressive Scan. I was looking around at different sites, and it was hard to tell if some did or didnt.

I watch movies on a Toshiba DVD player using component video cables. The Toshiba does not include progressive scan to my knowledge, but I doubt I'm missing much. The picture is like looking through a window.

How do tv's and dvd players get in these forums? Anyways, I think the Yamaha DVD players have progressive scan, model number is sumthing like dv747. Toshibas are still king though.

The Pioneer DVD-434 is a real nice progressive scan DVD player. Also is under $300 at most places. I to have a Wega, 32XBR400, and it's great with DVDs. I also need to get a progressive scan DVD player too, and will probably be getting that Pioneer soon.

i'll second illkid's suggestion. That pioneer offers awesome image quality and it is the cheapest progressive scan dvd player out there. The sound quality is also superb. Don't buy those expensive progressive scan dvd players because they just don't justify the price.

I heard that the Pioneer's dont do real progressive scan. They dont use the 3-2 pull down or somthin like that
Read that quite a few places. Has anyone here heard about that or am I just confused.

The Pioneer DVD-434 is a real nice progressive scan DVD player.

It's not a real progressive scan player. Waste of money. Go for the Toshiba prog scan.

Apologies, correction Pioneer not Yamaha, but as Total Reflected Power says, Tosh is the way to go, sometimes all is not what it appears with names like pro scan and digital reality creation, a lot depends on user preference, but personally I find that Sonys 'seem' clearer in dvd playback but side by side comparison shows that colours are muted to a darker, paler shade when compared to other brands. Trust no one- Tosh 1, Sony 2, Pioneer 3.

Toshiba, all the way. I have a couple of good friends who are high end hoem theater installers and they all said go Tosh. There is a new model coming out that is TRUE PROGRESSIVE SCAN for a retail of $399!!! The SD-4700. Check it out, the specs are at www.widescreen.com.

Pioneer 434 Pro scan. I have it and it's great. I use it on a pioneer 58" HDTV. Picture looks like liquid. i really recomend this DVD Player. Go to Etronics.com I payed $264.00 back in oct.

Uncle just bought the pioneer 737, yes it is pro scan, it has won some awards over in Japan, but it has various problems with playing certain disks which is not a problem I've encountered on my Tosh. Anyway its up to you...

Well I have a Toshiba SD-6200 in my rig and it performs very nicely. Amongst the top tier of players out there (well if you don't count the $3,500 Camelot Roundtable) it would be between that and the Sony 9000ES which is a little pricier but does include SACD as well as excellent CD playback capability (no duel tray tho).

Combing problems are minimal but there are slight chroma variances but this will not be that distracting IMO. Like a few people mentioned I would stay away from the Pioneer 434 (reasons below). If you hang on there are a number of new players on the way at reasonable prices from Panasonic, Denon (the 2800, already out) and Kenwood.

The 434 is a "true" progressive player, in that it has a progressive output available. However, the de-interlacing performance is poor. In fact it is worse than the built-in line-doublers in many progressive capable sets. That is why this player is generally not recommended. The progessive output just doesn't provide any benefit to most people: you could just get an interlaced player for less money and use your progressive-capable TV's line doubler and get better performance. The reason why it is sometimes said that the 434 isn't a "true" progressive player is that it does not have a mode to provide optimal de-interlacing of film based material (the so-called 3:2 pulldown). Because of the nature of film-based material, a different algorithm should be used to provide an artifact-free picture. The 434 doesn't have this. In addition, it is said that the video-mode performance on this player isn't very good either. Higher priced players like the Toshiba 6200 and Sony 9000 have proper film-mode and decent video de-interlacing which should provide superior results than a set's built-in line doubler.

What about the JVC progressive Scan player...I heard that is is pretty good, and can be had for about $400...

The Denon 2800 is definitely the progressive scan player to get. the Sony, Toshiba, etc use the not so hot Genesis chipset for deinterlacing, etc. The Denon 2800 is one of the very few to use the quite excellent DVDO chipset. Makes a HUGE difference.

The 2800 does indeed look good, just make sure you get one of the newer ones as early units had defective power supplies/combing problems that have now been fixed.

Oh, and the JVC is also a decent performer. Video-wise the quality is pretty good, with the audio section not fairing so well in many of the reviews I have seen. At this point, it seems the best price/performance point would be with the Denon as long as you pick up a newer unit.

Once again, if you hang on, the new Toshiba lineup is hitting stores as we write... Both Toshiba progressive scan models that are on their way have DVD-R compatibility and supposedly DVD Audio and SACD. There are 2 models are the 4700 and 5700. They will be starting at $399, so keep an eye out.
