progressive scan?

Simple stupid question i haven't been able to get answered. Figured this is the place to go. What exactly does it mean when a dvd player says that it has progressive scan? Thanks in advance.

You need an HDTV or a progressive scan player won't make any difference.

Progressive Scan: Each individual frame is produced by displaying every scanline (horizontal strips of picture data) top to bottom, 60 frames every second for NTSC, 50 for PAL.
Interlaced: Each individual frame is produced by interlacing 2 fields together, each field consists of every other scanline and are shown 1 after the other 60 times a second or 30 frames every second for NTSC, 25 for PAL.

Your computer monitor displays video using progressive scan, normal analog TV is interlaced broadcast video.

so would it be pointless to get a progressive scan dvd player if our tv is not hdtv? Is it the tv itself or the signal being sent by the tv stations that are interlacing?

It has to be Digital and support 480p, not necissarily HDTV

Its both. An analog TV set doesn't have the necissary scan frequency to display progressive video, and regular analog TV is broadcast interlaced.

This is all on the cusp of changing however, more TV's are now digital, and support progressive modes and broadcasters are starting to broadcast digital signals (both progressive and interlaced) in many Metro areas around the USA.

if you dont have Digital Cable or Satalite you dont have Progressive Scan broadcast thats for sure.
