The release of this game makes me wish I still had my wheel... I just bought F1 2014 for the PC on sale, which I have to play with a gamepad. I probably won't jump on Project CARS unless people say it's fun to play with a gamepad.

I've got the game on two computers and use a gamepad on one of them since I don't feel like lugging my wheel around from room to room. It works fine, pretty much just like playing on a console.

The great thing with Shift is that you could get into the various .ini files and really crank up both the AI and the realism of the physics and control. There were some good mods that really made it an impeccable experience.

How does Project Cars compare to Shift on the first-person view, especially at night? I was always very fond of the realistic head movement in Shift, and night-time first person view was almost terrifying, the night could be a deep ink that almost swallowed your view. If they maintained that experience, I can almost imagine how that combined with effective use of their physics engine could produce the best racing experience ever. The engine was always terrific at the core, but EA needed a game that was a little more approachable.

Shift 2 with the community mods were better than all the driving games till Assetto corsa. My only gripe with AS is there arent enough cars. AS with a great wheel is transcendent. I may pick this up if my wheel has fbb in this game.

This game is evilly addictive.

(I don't have a steering wheel & pedals anymore, but it's still fun with the keyboard.)

Started playing last night, and I've already got over 3 hours in-game.

Wish I could find the room to get something like my old (sadly broken) Act Labs Force RS wheel hooked up.

Works fine with an xbox controller. Car handling is like a hybrid of Shift 2 and GTR2.

So how is it with a Xbox controller?

Do the cars feel good? Better than Shift 2?

It's notably better with an analog stick than Shift2 (even with mods).

Loving this game so far. Would like to see more cars, but I can deal just fine with the current ones.

The big highway courses are awesome. California and Azure are a blast.

So how is it with a Xbox controller?

The default controller settings are pretty twitchy, but I turned the sensitivities way down (from 50 to 5) and it works well like that.

I am enjoying it. The car handling feels realistic enough to be believable and the graphics look amazing maxed out, especially during dawn/dusk hours.

My only complaint is that the menu system kind of sucks. You can't access options from within a race and you have to restart the game to apply a bunch of the graphics settings.

Keyboard!?!?!? Do you have an XBox or PS controller? Way better, Xbox One controller now works with Windows and PS4 controller with DS4 SCP tool which is amazingly good. Don't get a Logitech F710, one of the worst controllers I've used.

I haven't had a wheel in years, I had a G25 but it broke and played with a controller since then.

I have an F710, and I'm probably going to pick up an XBox controller soon.

FWIW, when I switched to Windows 8.1 a few months ago, the thing absolutely wouldn't work. I went into Device Manager and changed the driver to the XBox Gamepad driver and now it works again. Just in case anybody else has run into this.

One thing I really like about this game over Shift2 is the UI (I don't a lot of people don't share this opinion). It's much speedier to get around, IMO. I really miss a few of the old cars though. Nissan GT-R and Acura NSX were always my pet projects - and I'd love to see them in this game.

The only issue I have with my F710 is there's no FFB (under Win 8.1). Seems to work just fine in the game though (the controller itself, not FFB), but if at all possible, you'll want to use a wheel. Way more fun.

For the XB1 controller you need to download the driver from Microsoft, Windows 8 doesn't have it integrated, but once installed it works great. Can't wait for MS to release a wireless receiver so I don't have to have it plugged in all the time. For the 360, yeah gotta go pick the right receiver driver in system.

F710 is way too stiff for my liking, not very ergonomic, oddly enough it's a copy of the DS3 controller which feels significantly better but the DS4 is one of the most comfortable controllers I've used.

Yeah helmet cam while playing feels very immersive. Once i discovered it, i dont use anything else anymore

I would image that 120HZ+Oculus Rift+ helmet cam+ racing wheel would be ridiculously awesome. Imagine moving you head left right while racing at 120hz, now that's immersive.

i can't stop noticing the cardboard cut out people, and the card board trees... (of course is this when I crash) But one thing that bugs me is that on a cloudy day, sure the lighting is even, but under the car should still be darker! it should cast a darker shadow, not the same luminance as the ground around the car!!

I'm mostly glad that it runs like glass. I haven't encountered a single jitter or stutter since I started. I can't say that about Shift2 - - ran into all kinds of issues there (I'm also glad that I can finally hold a line with an analog stick - - Shift2 drove me crazy trying to get that tuned).

The crowds seem to be the big framerate dropper, which is probably why they kept the quality lower. The lighting and pavement textures have definitely been improved.

Also, just noticed they will be releasing a new car on a monthly basis (free). No indication how long they're going to keep that up. No word on if they will be adding any additional tracks (I would love to see Shanghai, Miami, and London street tracks again).
