My girlfriend and I are at a time in our relationship that we want to get something for each other to symbolize our love and commitment, and we were thinking about promise rings. They wouldn't be promise rings as much as a "reminder rings". Something of sentimental value so I can feel she's always with me, and vice versa.

We want to get some that are not very flashy, but that will remind us of each other. Matching or similar rings would be really cool. We're trying to steer clear of anything that resembles a wedding band. I'm looking for something pretty plain and silver/white gold for me. She wants something silver with a small stone in it. We want room to engrave something in thin, elegant type, either a name or a few words on the outside or maybe inside of the ring. Price cap is about $100 each. Some that we think are nice:

Me: Gold and Silver Claddagh Ring,

Her: The original Promise Ring, 10 Kt. Gold Claddagh Ring

Matching: "Vous et nul Autre - You & No Other" Ring, Posey Rings

I was just wondering if those on AT that have girlfriends or wives ever did anything like this. What kind of thing did you get? get matching rings? Did you What did you engrave on it? Was it really something special that meant alot? Was it kind of weird having a ring before your wedding? Any thoughts or ring style recommendations at all are welcome.

Thanks all.

EDIT: "Reminder ring" not promise ring.

don't get a ring until it's a real one. Why do you need a ring at this point? If you aren't planning on marrying the woman, just wait.

I bought my girlfriend a nice ring after 6 months. I knew I wanted to be with her. It's not a promise ring. I say the only "promise ring" is the engagement ring... which she will be getting also some day

Or you could just follow her to India. See if that works for you too.

Why is getting a ring a waste of money. I think rings are a great way for a couple to say that they are off the market and are completely content with their partner.

There is no such thing as a true "promise ring."

Finally, sounds like I got some advice from someone with an actual, real life girlfriend (not the inflatable kind).

I'm in the same boat, we're pretty sure we want to be with each other. It's not so much a "promise ring" as a "reminder ring". Something of sentimental value so I can feel she's always with me, and vice versa.

EDIT: Clarity

Because, at such a young age, anything can happen.
Promise ring don't mean squat. It's all show.

lol...

I'm going for 2 reasons:

1. I love my girlfriend and hated the idea of not being with her for 5 months. Especially when I knew she wanted me to be with her.
2. How many chances will I have in life to do a trip like this? Life is too short to pass up opportunities like this. I'm still going to finish school when I come back so why not go? I'm only putting school off for 1 semester.

a pre-engagement - engagement ring... dont freaking bother

i've never met a couple that "promised" like this and stayed together..... if you arent ready to get married just yet just make sure she knows it... if you want to get her a ring, get her one as a present but dont tie some promise to it and make it like an engagement ring. if you are ready to get married then buy her the ring and propose

i for one feel the "promise" rings are a waste of money, girls who want them are a high maintenence waste of time and will never get one (ring not the girl)

Well, I suppose... Maybe it's a "conditional ring"

If you love her, and want to show your love to here, do it. Thats what it is all about. With luck it all works out, if not, your not out big $$$, and you still will have some fond memories and a cool ring.

I've actually been married for 2+ years.
