Quick question for someone who knows about propane....

what size bottles can you get for propane?

My apartment complex doesn't allow propane tanks larger than 2.5# .... i currently have an empty 10# that i haven't refilled yet, but dont want to get rid of yet.

Do propane tanks come in 2.5# size? the smallest i can find online is 5#..

Check to see if they mean gallons instead of pounds. Folks who don't regularly use propane, confuse the two all the time.

This is those little green throwaway style containers. You can buy a refilling adapter for them.

Tried already... my Grill is too powerful for those... sucks it empty in 1 second.

2.5 gallons is 11# ... since the fire code says my 10# tank is no good... i doubt they mean 2.5 gallons.

Looks like you're limited to the disposable size propane tanks then.

What are the chances of you getting in trouble with the police for this?

Sounds like you're screwed.

The only solutions I can think of, besides getting the 4 pound tank, is to do a little bit of plumbing work. Probably more effort than it's worth, but you could daisy chain a dozen of those disposable tanks together.

Also, I just checked - in the cabellas catalog, they have a device so that you can refill the disposable bottles using a 20 pound tank. The rules don't say you can't have a 20 pound tank, they say you can't have a grill hooked to a 20 pound tank.
http://www.cabelas.com/p-0013259.shtml

I always thought it was against the rules to refill the disposable tanks, but I'm seeing that it's only illegal to transport them after they've been refilled. So, get a 20 pound tank, fill a bunch of those disposable tanks, and rig up a way to daisy chain them together.

edit: if you refill the tanks, with a good scale, weigh a brand new tank. Do NOT allow the weight of the refilled tank to exceed the weight of the new tank. And, DO NOT store refilled tanks indoors. Well, do not store ANY propane tank indoors as far as that matters.

Hang a 20 lb. tank on the end of a 16 foot two by four, preferably over the Fire Marshall's car.

we have the same rule. we decided to have a grill anyway w/ the 20lb tank. nobody has said anything yet and we are enjoying grilled steaks and such often. there are 3 or 4 in this complex with grills, at our old place everyone had a grill on the decks. I figure that they must not really care.

You guys recommending the 4# tanks didn't read the post.

That means the tank can only have a 1# capacity.
