Propane? What's your bill?

We are looking to buy a house that uses propane.
It is a large older farm house with new foam insulation.

He said it is $2200 a year.

That seems high...

What is yours?

I live in a 1400sq.ft. house with good insulation. We use propane for the furnace, stove, and water heater.

I've used $1385.79 in the last year.

Just keep in mind it's LPG, Liquified Petroleum Gas, therefore it's tied to gasoline prices.

It's $2.99 a gallon in the SF Bay Area.

My farm house had an oil furnace, an LPG heating system and electrical. This was to prevent a loss of heat which means frozen, bursting pipes in the winter if there was a problem.

1700 sqft, natural gas @ $56/month or $~675/year. It's hooked up to my furnace, hot water heater, fireplace(rarely use), stove, and oven.

we pay roughy $150 a month. once we got the new furnace it droped from $200-250 a month!

I use propane just for our stove/oven in the kitchen. I have one of those standard sized propane tanks that you use for an outside gas grill attached to it (tank is located outside, and is piped into the kitchen).

I use the stove just about every day (I rarely use the oven, because we have a large toaster oven that we use for most baking needs) and that one tank lasts me about six months. I always keep a spare in the garage so if it goes out, I have one as a backup. Costs just $12 per fill-up so only $24 a year for us.

We burn through about 900 gallons a year, 2100 sq ft house in Missouri, about $1800ish. We use it for heat and hot water. I'd verify that it was only $2200 through the propane company that services the tank, how many gallons was that? Propane prices fluctuate greatly, and sometimes it pays to prepay for all the propane you need for the winter in the summer. Prices tend to spike in the middle of winter because of demand.

Also you might have to pay rent on the tank, and then you also might have to contend with a leak someday as well. Just things to think about.

Some people like propane. I consider it the worst heating source commonly used. The tank ownership scams would be enough to turn me off from it, but it doesn't even seem cheap either. I guess maybe its better than electric, but what person living in an actual cold weather state uses electric?

I pay around $900/year (~450 gallons) to heat a 1700-sq-ft house (with an addl. 600 sq. ft. unfinished basement) in SW Missouri. The furnace is the only thing that's on propane.

the tank stays above ground but the plumbing goes below ground.

You can bury them but you need a sacrificial node like zincs on your boat.

In cold climates it's a good idea to have the tanks underground.
