Proper Hatiquette

So, what are everyone's rules on where the head covering goes on, and where it goes off?
Obviously the base rule is - if you are indoors, the hat goes off, if you leave it goes one.
Now, what about public transport, communal hallways, shopping malls and similar cases, that are neither truly indoor, not truly outdoor?

Currently I tend toward taking the hat off, if it doesn't get in the way.

Does everyone here even respect that? Or do some of you even belong to that group of cretins, that has to wear a hat even during lunch?

if it's not raining on your head, you're out of the sun or, in case you're talking about bonnets, the place you're in is heated, remove it because it's useless. I think wearing a hat without looking like an ass means you restrict its use to when it's actually useful. Otherwise you're trying to make a statement and will look like a massive tool. Pulling off a hat is difficult enough already unless you're 80.
Don't wear a hat while driving! It makes all sorts of red flags go up, people will think you're one of those 90 years old who doesn't look, goes slow and burns his clutch.

I take mine off indoors except in large public places (malls, event halls, etc). ...and at work, since I have the 'pleasure' of sitting directly underneath an air conditioning return duct. My boss commented on it once, so I invited him to sit at my desk during his next long conference call - (he got up to get a sweater halfway through the call...) - and never mentioned it again. I do take my hat off when I leave my cube, though. I don't just wear hats indoors at work.

This is the downfall of civilization. When courtesy and etiquette are considered vestiges of the yesteryear.

When I see these young "rideurs" with their woolly bonnets worn year around, to celebrate their alleged prowess at winter sports, I see a lost generation.
Oh well, at least they're not fat, I guess.

Yup, it's analogous to voodoo. It's like speaking incantations before entering a building, or performing a task. Wearing a hat doesn't affect health, safety, or performance. Stupid rules are stupid.

I generally wear a hat when I'm playing or watching sports.....<putty>gotta support the team!</putty> Of course the latter often happens indoors, which is ok in that scenario...but take the damn thing off when they play the anthem at the beginning of the game!
