I recommend never crimping unless the situation really demands it. Terminate in new keystone jacks, test with premade patch cables. Test each patch cable first for peace of mind.

Can I use these? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IO3HC6A/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1AMUYYA3CT6HJ&psc=1
Or just buy these other keystone jacks I saw? https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matter...rd_wg=exPSO&psc=1&refRID=4XMAZWSQRMFC9V2J686N

My new punchdown tool for reference https://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-Pun...rd_wg=d2JNb&psc=1&refRID=9D1B669DX3ERM6T7W1SR

As its been the 2 ports boxes well the ones they sent me awhile ago seemed to punch down fine once I learned to put the right wire on all 8 pin lol that was first time using the keystone and the punchdown tool.

First time? It takes a little practice and care. Take a scrap and build a cable, test it with a couple of tested patch cables, repeat.
Then go re-terminate your existing runs, with confidence that you are doing it properly. Test the runs using the known good cables.
If they are still coming up bad, they are bad.

I running new cable and I want to use one of the surface ports.
I see ones that have 2 ports but nothing like I want is to have the cable continue down the floorboard and add at least 1 more of the surface ports.

I am a beginner in networking. So, I don't know everything about networking. I have some basic knowledge of Ethernet, Network, LAN, MAN, WAN, routers, switches, modems, etc. I want to set-up a network in my new office. So, I need some suggestion from this forum. I have to use 1 modem, 2 routers, and 1 switch for making a local network. But, the problem is which cable I use for that like patch cable, ethernet cable, cross cable, etc.

Hi all! I'm new here so if this is not the place to ask this please let me know! I have AT&T uverse for internet, the wifi router is downstairs however the junction box is upstairs in my office. Recently I decided that since my home is already wired with Cat5 to all the rooms that I would make use of this. I purchased a 16 port network switch from NewEgg a while back and placed it into the network box where the lines all come together. The issue im having is I need a line from the router to feed the switch. I attempted to simply run a drop through the attic to the room that has the router like the others are done. This didnt work out for me as the wires were not ran the way I thought they were ( once crawling up there and almost plummeting to my death). Speaking with an install buddy of mine he suggested that i just run a pig tail to the switch using scotch clips which i have and abundance of thanks to the generosity of the AT&T installer that left them here the last time they were out. I spliced into the freed for the router and noticed that it only utilizes two wires... the orange and white and green.. however both are connected to different wires when they go down to the router. cans someone give me some in site before i go cutting into stuff?

The Orange/White & Green/White are the feed coming in from the AT&T ONT to the Modem. You need to come out of the Router (any of the jacks on the router marked as Network) with a CAT 5 cable to feed it into the Input on the 16 port Switch

I was afraid of that thanks

It's not a big deal. You can use a premade RJ45 patch cord to get from the Router to the Switch ..Hard part is physically getting it from Point A to Point B

thread needs a bump and reality check. taken by me at a nursing home I was working on.

This is POTS but the real world networking can be just as fugly. In the same building:
Read and Heed the warning, noobs. Tread lightly with your toner.

Heh... on the other hand, if you actually had a problem with a wire, which would be easier to service, this, or what DRC_40 pictured? IMO, your pic might be easier than tearing open all those neatly bundled groups of wire. Granted, I didn't watch that video, just see the screenshot pic.

When I worked at the hospital I saw some crazy stuff. In some of the wiring closets they treated the ethernet like POTS. They stripped the jackets all the way to the ceiling where the cables came in and had all the individual pairs in trays going into BIX panels, then from the BIX panels it went to the patch panel. No idea why they did that. I'm surprised it even worked.

I've done some work on POTS at our CO, mostly cross connection customers to the DMS and/or DSLAMs on the MDF, which looks like this:
