Proper use of § symbol?

Google failed me. As far as I know, this ("§") is just called a "section sign." Right? Anyway, I couldn't find a page that explained it's proper use. And dictionary.com doesn't seem to be able to interpret the symbol properly. Can some English expert out there explain it's proper use to me?

Stands for "Section" - used in legal writing all the time. For example

§12.34(A)(1)(c(iii) --- Section 12.34, subsection A, sub-subsection 1, sub-sub-sub...you get the idea.
