Proper way to apply Arctic Silver to Slot A CPU??

Hi,

I read the instructions on the Arctic Silver webpage on how to apply the compound to Socket-A CPUs: http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm

But what is the proper way to apply this stuff to my Athlon Slot A 750 Mhz CPU??

As you may know, the Athlon Slot A is encased in black plastic, and there is no access to the CPU 'core'..???!?!?!? So there is no way to apply arctic silver directly to the core without removing the black plastic case.

From memory, I think I just smeared it on under the HSF, and went on about my bussiness. It always worked, so I must have done something right. I am not sure if that is the proper way, but it worked for me. Hope this helps.

you can remove the case using a screwdriver - carefully. You dont have to remove the case. just put it on the plastic.

On the slot cpu's there are two places you can put heatpaste; between the heatplate and the heatsink (just remove the heatsink and apply as described for socket A cpu's), and between the inside of the heatplate and the core. Getting to the core is more tricky, first you have to remove the plastic casing and then also take of two metal clips holding the heatplate. It is described here,here, and here

I'm reluctant to pop off the plastic casing for the Athlon in order to apply arctic silver to the core and cache chips.

I think I may stick with just putting it onto the interface between the aluminum heat transfer plate and the heatsink.

If you do pop the case, do not put Arctic Silver II on the cache chips. There is a significant gap between the chips and the thermal plate (.02" to.04") which is many times the .001" to .004" gap that AS2 is designed for. This size gap requires a very thick paste-like compound for effective transfer and long-term stability.
