I usually use the stock cooler/pad TBH. I'm a monster like that.

Though sometimes the CPU does not come with a cooler so have to buy one separately. Which reminds me I still have a spare cooler from one of my PC orders. It took too long for it to come in so I ordered another one. Need to find a good use to it. Been wanting to mess with power supply design, can always use it as an overkill method of cooling a mosfet array.

small amount spread evenly over entire surface with edge of clean credit card. Discover card works best.

Still have some Arctic Silver II and some Arctic Silver 5 left. All the PCs I have built in the last 15 years or so were overclocked and still running.

Last build (god knows when that was) I was still using the arctic silver recommendation of pea sized dot spread around using a plastic sandwich bag and finger.

That gif made me laugh more than I should have lol.

I did the pea size in the middle and squished down with my cooler last week with some 8 year old tube of arctic silver that's still good.

The stock Intel cooler is fine as long as your not going to OC your chip very much, if your gonna go for a 600Mhz+OC then you defiantly need to look at a more robust option. Sometimes you can get lucky, I found a Foxconn 775 cooler for $6 at a local repair shop, I call it the "aluminum meatloaf" LOL, it's large and the best thing about ANY aftermarket cooler is you avoid those PITA Intel push-pins.

Can you look for a more robust option without being so defiant?

As someone who installed their first cooler in ~15 years last night, that video made me physically cringe.

It would take you 15 years to individually apply it to each of the processor's pins.

I just use the stock cooler since I've never been able to achieve a stable overclock of any amount on any processor since I started trying in the 90s. I have a curse.

that's some bad luck. I've consistently been able to get a solid overclock from every processor I've tried with in the last 20 years. So probably like 5-6 chips.

I've gone out of my way to buy recommended overclocking motherboards and HSF combos. Nothing. I'm talking i7-920, 3770k, 4790k, no love.

Can you use silicone sealant for the thermal stuff? That way the heatsink will stick to the cpu better.

You want to use a metallic based sealer, you seal all the edges around the cpu and heat sink so the electrons don't leak out. If you don't plan to ever change the cpu or heat sink you can just use solder and solder it. Make sure you use lead free.

You can also tape screening mesh, the typical bug screens you can buy are good for about 2 Ghz. If you overclock too high the electrons might still make it through the mesh.

Good video. Love that transparent plastic thing to show the distribution. Explains exactly why I don't ever want to deal with this crap.

TBH I've always done the business card method, did not realize it spread so well if you just do a pea sized blob in the middle. His explanation makes a lot of sense actually, since with pre applying it, you end up with air bubbles but if you let the pressure spread it you get a more even distribution.
