Yes. I take in the same amount of protein every day based on my body weight. I take 1.5 grams of protein per lb. of body weight per day.

So if I'm 145 lbs then I'd need 217g of protein?

You can certainly get your protein from whole foods only. Supplements just make it more convenient. It's much quicker for me to put 2 scoops of powder in my shaker with some water, than to cook up 2 chicken breasts.

Really?
On days I don't workout, I don't drink a protein shake.
At nearly $3 a pop, I didn't want it to go to waste (based on the assumption that I should only drink it after working out).

Very true. I just try to get four decent meals in a day. I Quit taking protein powder years ago and have noticed no change.

Well, if you noticed no change, then you should notify everyone in the weight training world because they obviously have it all wrong

that sounds quite a bit excessive
edit: I found a site that says 1.2 grams protein per kg of body weight. This makes a bit more sense, since for your 145 lbs that means 79 grams of protein a day
excess protein cant be too good for you...

$3 a pop? What the hell? Buy some whey. You can buy 10lbs or so for ~$30 if you look around (e.g. www.bodybuilding.com).

When you say "notice no change" - what do you mean? You notice no change in what? Your physique? Your strength?

Well, I don't know what your stats are (height, weight, bodyfat, strength), but I think the vast majority of lifters out there would probably not fare so well if they followed your recommendation and just tried to wing it.
5'11, 192lbs probably hang out around 9-10% body fat these daysOriginally posted by: Special K

LOL! Lot of uninformed people here! Protein is hyped? Overrated? ROFL! Anyways, $3 a pop for protein is shooting yourself in the foot. Just get a tub of Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey (Chocolate tastes delicious ), and enjoy. Btw, protein is great and all, but still get your ass to the gym, 4-5 times a week (at least). Gas is nothing without the exotic car.
