Yes. I take in the same amount of protein every day based on my body weight. I take 1.5 grams of protein per lb. of body weight per day.

I'll second that.

So if I'm 145 lbs then I'd need 217g of protein?

that sounds quite a bit excessive

edit: I found a site that says 1.2 grams protein per kg of body weight. This makes a bit more sense, since for your 145 lbs that means 79 grams of protein a day

excess protein cant be too good for you...

Do you have a study to back that up? The bodybuilding community has been following the 1-1.5g protein / lb. LBM for years, and we're still doing fine.

Nope, none whatsoever. I only did a casual google search to try and find out some information and one of the first sites I opened provided that figure above so I figured the other poster might have confused his lbs for kgs.

As for excess protein not being good for you. I said that based on just common sense- since really nothing in excess is good for you, even water. Google "excess protein" but I really have no opinion on the things they warn about. Up to you to decide.

Yeah we should pick up a "keg" from GNC, read the back label and get educated!

I followed the 1.5 per lb method and was able to get to 170 at 5'4'' 9% BF. I use other supplementation as well. If you wanna look like a monster you have to eat like a monster.

I recently got my BS in Excercise Science/Pre-PT. I brought this issue up with a few of my professors and they all agreed it would take lots of protein to create issues with the kidneys.

No doubt. I think that's one thing I underestimated when I started lifting. I thought, "oh, I'll just add a little extra and be fine." No sir. I literally had to eat so much I started to hate food.

Anyway, I'm nowhere near a monster (as of today I'm 6'1", 202lbs and hovering about 15% body fat on a bulk). I'd like to put on 10 more pounds of LBM, but it's likely to take me a while.

Really?

On days I don't workout, I don't drink a protein shake.
At nearly $3 a pop, I didn't want it to go to waste (based on the assumption that I should only drink it after working out).

$3 a pop...WTF, you don't hire a gigalo for a protein shake.

Optimum Nutrition Gold Class 100% Whey. like 10lbs for under $50 and each 30cc scoop is 24 grams of protein.

I am 5'10.5"...in my hey day at 190lbs at 10% that was stacked. I am at 200lbs now bulking and about 20%+ i carry a little gut and the rest is pretty lean. Never did deadlifts (275 - 300lbs for reps) and squats (180-205 for reps) before though, and now on my 5-6th week of them and adding a bit of weight each time, I am finding protein is more important....I get hungry a lot.

I am on a lot of supplements too, as I just can't eat all the whole foods I need.

If you're working out and you're trying to put on lean mass and build muscle, then you be consuming plenty of protein everyday. Protein shakes should be used only if your normal diet doesnt give you enough protein, which in most cases for people, it won't. So yea, take 2-3 shakes on your non-training days as well as days you work out.

Yar, ze protien be the way to true success. I'm like living off protien bars. I'll down 3 of them a day on campus, because it's cheaper for me to pick up a box or two of bars to last a week than it is to try and eat crap food on campus. Working at a GNC and snagging stuff that gets marked down with a 30% discount helps too.

But I'm nothing to gawk at. I'm 215 at 5 foot 7, plenty of flab left to go around. I've dropped about 7.5% body fat since I started working at GNC, and working out again though. At least, according to the online body fat calcs that take your waist n weight. Slow but steady changes ftw. I'm working on getting my diet in better order right now. I need to stop eating with my folks, they eat crap.

$3 a pop? What the hell? Buy some whey. You can buy 10lbs or so for ~$30 if you look around (e.g. www.bodybuilding.com).

EAS Myoplex deluxe, $75 for a 36 pack, plus cost of 2 glasses of milk is roughly $3 a shake

I know it's overhyped/priced, but it's something that tastes good that I can actually swallow without throwing up.

Where are you getting these $3 protein shakes? Is this at your gym? If so, you're getting scammed.

ON 100% whey tastes much better than myoplex:

ON 100% whey

That is the cheapest place to get it, AFAIK.

back to the original topic....you can have about the same amount of protein on the days you don't workout, just limit the carbs

IsoPure Zero Carb for me...but I think I'm going with a new flavor after my current strawberry jar's up. Not trying to build mass here, just give my muscles the ingredients they need to repair.

All that protein cannot be good for you. And it's certainly not necessary.

Look at cavemen. They are all ripped. Did they drink protein shakes?

Cavemen didn't have cars or any modern conveniences that simplify tasks and reduce muscle expenditure in humans.

Some of you Optimium nutritution fan bois should try Dynamtize whey protien. Its mixes better, less clumping, less cholestral and taste a lot better. Try Choco Mint.

Ahhh, but I get 56g of protein per pack of Myoplex, and I only have time to make one shake a day.

I would have to make 2 ON shakes a day to get the same amount of protein.

How do you only have time to make one? It's simple - take powder, put into a shaker bottle, shake, and drink. That takes less than a minute.

I just got the 10lb bag of ON the other day for like $40 or so. I ALWAYS put 2 scoops into my shake, giving me the 48g of protein from the shake + the protein from the milk.
