PS2 = CRAP

The sony PS2 is a pretty good dvd player. It also gives me bragging rights when people come over and see it on top of my large screen tv (need widescreen soon).

Best of all, it looks cool! Other than that, the games out for it are either mediocre or crap. I got the buy.com bundle and the football game madden 2001 is pretty good, but a bit SLOW. The fantasia that it came with blows chunks. Every review said it was good. Well the gameplay blows and so does the ever-so-hyped-up graphics. My winamp Geiss plug-in is about 100 times better than it.

Anyways, I play my Dreamcast alot more than with the PS2. Sony and it's developers, sorry but it's a major letdown. :|

Personally, I don't think that the PS2 is worth the money either. But as other said this post does not belong. I may buy the PS2 when it comes down in price (about $150 or so) but I am actually more interested in the GameCube. I don't want to start a Nintendo vs. Sony argument, I am just going to wait for the one I like.

The DVD looks fine to me..and yes I also have a couple set-top players with built-in hardware decoders (JVC and a Toshiba). Of course the controller's a little weird for playing movies, but that's why I'm getting a remote ($15..big deal). People who gripe about the PS2 and/or its DVD quality are for the most part those who don't own one. Personally, I think it does a good job playing DVD movies (compared to other sub $300 players) and the games I've played have been pretty cool. Tekken Tag, Ridge Racer, SSX, Madden 2k1, DOA2: Hardcore come to mind. Keep in mind these are only first generation launch titles, so of course they'll get better. Dreamcast games SUCKED when the system was first introduced, and so did the N64 titles (though Mario 64 was kinda cool). As for not having any good games until March? That's bull$hit - NBA Live 2k1, the reason why I bought the PS2, is coming out in December, and Gran Turismo is coming out soon as well.

Finally, for those of you bashing it for its pricetag, stop whining and shut up! Who cares if it's $300? Don't knock it just because you can't afford it! That's gotta be the sorriest excuse to complain about (reminds me of all the people who told me flatpanels were useless mainly because they never saw one in action and also couldn't afford one, and then they'd come over to my place just to drool over my SGI screens). Half the people here don't mind forking over $300 every couple months for a new 3D card or other computer upgrade. The PS2 will definitely last more then 6 months, is priced reasonably imo considering you also get a DVD player (thought the price will probably drop to around $249 sometime next year), and is compatible with PS1 games. And just wait until the real kickass games come out.. Sure there's a lot of hype now, but that's only because of the shortage and the countdown til Christmas. What console has ever been released without all the hype? Ok enough rambling.

While I agree that $300 (or more if you bought it on eGay) is stupid, keep in mind that the first generation of PS1 games sucked too.

It took developers some time to figure out how to squeeze performance out of the PS1. Since the PS2 is even harder to program for, it could be some time before we see truly great graphics from it.

Of course, by then, X-Box will probably be out and who knows what'll happen then...

Damn.. Graphics don't always make the game, especially for RPGs. I'd rather see a great story being focused on then on graphics cause if the story isn't good, I'm just not going to be interested in it, ala FF8. Other types of games might be better with better graphics, which is the reason why companies continue to keep making new systems. It's going to be a long time I think before CGI type quality graphics are going to be with a playable interface instead of just movies. I don't even know of a PC game that has CGI quality graphics.

I also agree with djbacklash, $300 is only a lot to people who can't afford it. Hell, I remember when N64 and PS1 were $300 and I don't remember seeing this many complaints about it..

I own a playstation 2, and it plays dvds just fine, the only flaw i see in is that damn power button...

Hrmm.. well I think I'm happy with my Dreamcast and the nearly infinate collection of games for it.. besides, I bought the DC for 100 bucks with 2 controllers and 2 memory cards. Then if you have a fast connection and a burner....

Oh yeah.. Sony is just doing their same old thing again though, why are they the only console in the big 6 (N64, DC, xBox, and Game Cube) to only have 2 joystick ports without having to buy a stinking adapter for 2 more? They just want money. And until I see some evidence that it is even worth 150 dollars, I won't be giving them any of mine.

A friend showed me how it is cable Modem ready and has a hard drive slot in the back.
Sounds like one of those set top boxes people were hacking except sony will sell you the hard drive, so you can record Tivo some movies (I guess). I thought the graphics looked just like one of those arcade machines. Its expandable, pratical (DVD,internet,games). But it doesn't comes close to my Geforce Graphics (sorry). Hats off to sony for PS2, but it will be surpassed by the next combo Box thats comes out!
