Can anyone tell me how the quality of the DVD playback on the PS2 is compared to a regular set top box DVD player? Thanks

Better than VHS - but NOT as good as dedicated console players. It has a somewhat grainy look to it, but it isn't horrible...

I personally think Sony did it on purpose to not compete with their own DVD players.

Well I don't really want a whole "X is better" flame war, but I'm trying to decide which one I want. You see, I don't have a DVD player, and I want a new console system. The PS2 looks promising because it has a DVD player built in, but if the quality of the player isn't good, then, well...that's sucks. And the DC on the other hand is already established as a good system, lots of games, cheap.

But I WAAAAAAAANT DVD!

If you're looking for a good after-Christmas experience, get a DC. If you want the ultimate system in 2001 (MGS anyone), go for the PS2.

Well konichiwa, to be brutally honest, I would say to get the PS2. DAMN, I've said it. Now, being the Sega follower I am, the reason I say this is because you don't already have a PS2. Now, depending on the quality that you want, that all depends on what kind of TV you have. The sharpness is already aparrent on ANY DVD player you buy. The quality only comes into play when you have a DTV or HDTV.

Please no flaming me on that comment though, because I say that on what I've seen in my short experience with DVD.

PS2 DVD isn't by any means "sucky", it is definitely watchable.. And future firmware updates might increase the quality - although I really doubt it.

I have a little $150 GE DVD player I purchased at good ol' Wal-Mart, and it's great. It's awesome, and perfectly compliments my 19" TV. So I would say the DVD capabilities in the PS2 are more than likely better.

I would reccomend getting a DVD-ROM drive for your computer, and getting an adapter if that is all possible. You can get those for really good prices now-a-days. If your TV is quite aways from your computer though, I don't no what to tell ya.

Is this from personal experience? If it is from experience, what's wrong with the PS2 DVD playback?

DOnt get PS2 now, wait like a year when the games will actually be good and the price will be lowered. Go with a DC right now because of all the cool games for it. Get a dvd player for your comp as well, they are pretty cheap.

Good question konichiwa, but take it a step further. How does the PS2 compare to a stand alone DVD player and how does it compare to a DVD ROM player? How much do you have to pay for an IDE DVD that compares well in quality to a home theater unit? And don't forget you have the cost of the NTSC adapter to get the pic to your TV.

I was hoping the PS2 DVD could work in our home theater setup too. It would save $200 for a dedicated DVD and help defray the cost of the PS2. If it isn't "good" enough, I'll be looking at the SONY DVP-C600D, 5-disc carousel CD Changer for near $400.00! Perhaps another manufacturer is offering a changer now for a little less?

I personally think the DVD playback on the PS2 is quite good,
easily on par with my Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM + ATi AIW 128 32Mb
combo. The only annoyance I've noticed is there is no time
given on the PS2, so you never know how far into the movie
you are.

I'm not sure what you're talking about since North American PS2's
don't require any kind of adapter in order to work with NTSC
televisions.

Well since you bring that up...I am starting to think myself that maybe just buying a standalone DVD player is better, and then waiting until next Spring to see what is going to be stirring in the console arena. I have a thread that's in GH...asking about DVD players. Basically the response I've gotten is that Toshiba and Pioneer are two good brands to go with.

Personally, I think I've decided on the Pioneer DV333. It retails at $300, but at 800.com, after three rebates and special offers the total price is $155. Seems like a great price to me, and on top of that, the DVD player plays CDrs and VCDs. So if you want, you can rent (err...buy) a DVD, and copy it to 2 CDr discs and then own it.

Of course, I'd *never* *ever* advocate something so illegal as that, but if you *wanted* to, against my *suggestions*, you *theoretically* could. It may be more work than I want to go through, but I think it's a better option to have than to give up.

Can I ask why you want the 5-disc'er specifically?

I have a set-top DVD player, a DVD-ROM drive w/ Decoder card (and software actually), and a PS2. I also have a Dreamcast w/ about 30+ games.

If I was you, I would get a PS2 & a DVD player, but if you can't, get the PS2 with a remote.

Well I think what I'm going to do is get a set-top DVD player...and wait until spring and see how things have panned out in terms of 2nd-gen PS2 games, PS2 dropping price, and the GameCube and XBox.

And don't forget you have the cost of the NTSC adapter to get the pic to your TV. Guess I should say that I would need the adapter to get the pic out to my TV from the DVD ROM, since my video card doesn't have an NTSC output. Heh, it's a cludge way to go anyway...

I'd be looking for the carousel to handle music CD duty generally. No compromise solution IMO. Using the PS2 is viable to me, but if it sucks for DVD, I'll be looking for a hot deal on a carousel. I just figured if people were satisfied with DVD ROM performance, the PS2 wouldn't be far behind, if at all. No way one will ever be part of a PC I build. That space is better used by a CD burner. A DVD burner will also be preferable when the price drops.

Well, Ornery, I was just looking around on 800.com ... and I found a Pioneer 5-disc carousel DVD/CD/VCD player for $299.95 that, after a couple coupon deals, you can get for $190. Let me know if you're interested and I'll tell you the special offers.

Not just yet, but thanks for the update. I'm not even sure which receiver to go for. Perhaps I'll just get a SONY package. I need the whole kit and caboodle, so that may be the way to go. I'd like to wrap it around a SONY 32" TV for starters. I'd go for the 35" if it would fit the Entertainment Armoire we're getting.

The Total Harmonic Distortion level for these SONY systems seem to be lacking, but I've noticed the same specs for all the manufacturers in that price range. I'll probably buy it locally at Best Buy, so if it turns out to be crap, I'll simply return it and cough up the money for the good stuff!

More Home Theater Info..

I'm kicking it around now! Looking at getting a larger entertainment center to accommodate a Sony KV-36FS12 36" FD Trinitron WEGA TV and DVP-C660 5-Disc CD/DVD Changer. I was thinking of just getting the HT-5000D 5 Disc DVD Home Theater Package, which includes that changer, but it is really lacking all the way around. Perhaps the STR-DE945 A/V Receiver will do, but I'm going to have to go elsewhere for speakers.

Any suggestions for satellite speakers that feature at least 6" woofers? And what about the powered subwoofer? Seems to me the current "subwoofers" are asked to go a little higher than I remember. Hell, you're kicking out a few hundred watts to 5 speakers. Why not include a little bass in there too? The system ought to be able to sound halfway decent without the sub running IMO.

And what's the deal with SONY pricing and availability? I'm not going to see any coupons and price matching on that stuff, am I?

If you're deciding between the 2 systems, it all depends on what you want. considering you can get a DC for about $150 less (even less if you look hard enough) and if you also look hard you can find a decent DVD player for only about $150. I think you should determine it on what system has games you like better. I personally think both are highly overrated and am going to wait for the Game Cube (God what a stupid name for a console) and the X-box, then decide which is most worth it. But as for quality on the DVD of the PS2, I have a stand alone DVD player and my roommate has a PS2, and I think that they are quite comparable to each other.
