PS2 Mouse not working in XP

New build, Chaintech VNF4 board, I installed XP Home with this old USB optical
mouse installed. Once the OS was up and running I remembered why I had shelved
that mouse - doesn't work right. So, shut down, plugged in a PS2 mouse and...nothing....
doesn't work in Windows. I booted to some DOS drive utlities to check and it works
in DOS. Is the PS2 mouse port not working for some reason, maybe Windows didn't
add it since it didn't have a mouse plugged in?

Check the device manager to make sure it is working properly. If it is not installed properly then it will not work in Windows. Have you tried a USB mouse?

USB mouse works fine - PS2 mouse not showing up at all in Device Manager. Yes I did a proper shutdown
before plugging the PS2 mouse in. Trying a system repair right now.

It may well be that if you installed it without a mouse in, it didn't bother installing the drivers for it.

I had something like this happen to me. Basically, I installed 2k with USB keyboard/mouse and then later, tried to update USB drivers or something. Either way, that update required a restart, and the USB mouse/keyboard weren't working, obv because something had to be restarted I'd presume.
So i thought, darn, ok, where's that POS old keyboard. Plugged it in, nothing, same with mouse. Damn I thought, forced restart it is then. Usb keyboard worked fine in DOS, as did old keyboard. Got into windows, and up comes found new hardware for both USB and the new keyboard/mouse.
Click OK to restart it did say. But wait a minute. I can't. As none of the stuff is working. Genuinely nothing I could do. Just reinstalled Windows as it was a new install anyway. Great fun. Like when you get the Error Detecting Keyboard Press any key to continue when booting up. Genius.

I definitely think it's because I didn't have it plugged in when the OS was installed.
I did a repair with the XP disc and it didn't help. Now guess I need to decide whether
to just live with it (probably won't be a PS2 keyboard port either) or nuke it right now
while I don't have much on the system. Thanks MS

Hi, Jiggy is right, but even if it says it's working OK remove it from Device Manager and reboot. Windoze will reinstall it and usually gets it right.
Good Luck, Jim
